Casey put his camera down when his eyes fell on Gabe. He was sitting on the bleachers alone, which was kinda strange. Already during the last weeks, Casey had noticed it that he didn't seem to be in best form. While most of the other students long were back to their former selves.
Casey grabbed for his backpack and stepped down the stairs. None of his business; the coach, his friends from the team, or the cheerleader might be there for Gabe; not he, Casey, the boy he had bullied for years. But he couldn't help it, when he reached the bench, Gabe was still sitting there, staring into nowhere, his helmet carelessly discarded onto the ground, he stopped. „This was a great game tonight,“ he said.
The brawny football player winced. “Don't talk with me; the others might think we are friends.“ But his voice was low and tired, not as mockingly and mean as before.
„The others don't pay any attention,“ Casey answered, looking at the group of players who celebrated their victory together with some of the cheerleaders. "Why aren't you with them anyway?"
„Maybe I will quit the team.“
„What?!“
„You heard me. I don't think that I can do this any longer.“
„Did you already talk with coach Willis? You are his number one!“
Gabe shuddered visibly. „He... he gives me the creeps. I can't get out of my head what he has done. With me. With the others.“ He pulled his face. „Everyone tells me to move on; leave this night behind. But I am still dreaming about it every night.“
Casey breathed in deeply; it was a surprise that Gabe, of all students, felt like this, the cool, arrogant star player of the Hornets who always had things under control. But yes, he could feel with him. „I guess a lot of us do, even if they don't talk about it. I too,“ he admitted.
„You?!“ Gabe jerked around, grabbing for his collar, his dark eyes suddenly filled with anger. „You don't know what I am talking about. Everyone might call you a hero because you killed her. But you were the only one at school not infected. So, how can you know how it feels to be controlled by a fucking alien?“
„You think it was easy to kill her,“ Casey whispered, „I have seen her, not Marybeth, but her true self. A monster, covered in a slimy, stinky mass, and her outcries were vibrating through my body. Her eyes were golden, glowering, piercing. This was the worst. With these eyes, she was able to dive right into my head.“ He squeezed his eyes shut to escape the tormenting memories, all in vain. „Our thoughts were melting into each other, and I felt her hate; she wanted me to kill. Eliminate all humankind. And I was like paralyzed, unable to think clearly.“ He licked his dry lips. „It was pretty close, I guess; I am not the hero who stood up against an alien to save the world. It was just blind luck that I managed it to place a pen with scat into her eye.“
„I didn't know that.“ Gabe's muted voice reached his ears like through a haze.
„No one knows; for what would it be good for? The nightmare is over; everyone just wants to move on like before.“ A faint smile sneaked onto his lips. „And to be honest: it feels nice not to be the school's geek anymore everyone uses to fuck around with.“
Suddenly Gabe looked burdened with a guild. „Sorry,“ he murmured,“ for being such an asshole all the time.“
Casey shrugged.“At least it has taught me to follow my instincts when it comes to escaping a hopeless situation,“ he said. "Come on, let's go to the others." He held out his hand to Gabe; the football player hesitated only shortly before he grabbed for it.
