Zeke hit the break when he noticed the opened door of the Connor’s house; some boxes were standing on the porch. What was this supposed to mean? After the divorce, Mr. Connor had left the town; this was about four years ago. And Casey’s mom... Zeke swallowed. It was hard to think about her. He had known that she had been seriously ill, cancer, and he had always wanted to visit her. But he had always looked for flimsy excuses... until it had been too late.
Suddenly a young man stepped out of the door, loaded with two more boxes. Shit! Casey! It hit Zeke out of the blue to see him again. They had been friends once, maybe more, even if they had never talked openly about their feelings. Back then, he had known that he could trust him blindly, tell him his deepest secrets. Until Casey had started to date Delilah.
Zeke hadn't been willing to accept this, had tried to convince him that he was going to make the biggest mistake. Finally, it ended with a big fight, Casey left Herrington behind, and they had never talked again. It took a while until Zeke had been able to look forward again; during the last six years, he had only lived for the Coyote Ugly, his own little pub in Columbus. Back to fleetingly one-night-stands, no one he would let into his life.
Still unable to move, he stared over to the Connor’s house. Not sure if he was ready to meet him now. But before he could decide to hit the pedal to the medal, Casey’s eyes fell onto the GTO. Like in slow-motion, he put down the boxes, and Zeke could see him hesitating before he finally stepped down the stairs. “Zeke, “he murmured.
“Yeah. “He had to clear his throat. “Sorry because of your mom. I wanted to come to her funeral, but... “
Tears were sparkling in blue eyes, but Casey fought them back. “It’s okay, I understand. “
Zeke shook his head. “No, it’s not... “He was looking for words, but how to explain that he had been a coward, afraid to see him again and to reawaken old feelings. “I guess I should have been there. She … was always good to me. “
A faint smile sneaked onto pale lips. “She loved you, “Casey agreed. “One day she told me, you are like a second son for her. “
“No shit! “
“Don’t blame yourself. I was her son, and I left her alone, too. I was so busy with my faked career as a famous photographer, and Delilah... and all, and in the end, I didn’t even dare to come back home to her when she needed me most. “
He looked so burdened with guilt, and Zeke couldn’t help it; he put his hand onto his shoulder and squeezed it slightly. “I’m sure she did understand. Sie always was so proud of you. “
Casey huffed. “Proud because of what? For working at a shabby photo studio, taking boring family pics? For secretly visiting gay clubs, hanging out with strangers? You were so right, you know, back then, when you told me that Delilah is a big mistake. But I wasn't willing to listen. Tried to fool myself; hoped that everything would be fine if I believed in it long enough. “
Tears finally started to flow. “But nothing is okay. My life is still a mess like it was at Highschool. But back then, there was my mom, and I knew I could always count on her. Now... “He sniffed. “Now I am all alone, and I don’t know what to do next. I need to sell the house, and Delilah called me yesterday, demanding a divorce, and... and... “
Too much info, too many emotions, and Zeke had never been good with dealing with this. But here was Casey, and he needed him, maybe more than he had ever needed him before. “Hey, “he said, trying hard to keep his voice even. “Guess all this was a bit too much lately. Not a good time to make any decisions. Why don’t you take a break for a while? We could hang around in the garage; have a Heiniken or two... Watch some cheesy movies... “
Though the tears were still running over his face, Casey smiled faintly. “Like back then, “he whispered. “Just you and me. “
Zeke nodded. “Like back then, “he agreed.
