„The biggest fear of a wise man,“ Commissioner Reagan said, letting his eyes wander over the group of new recruits, „is one day to forget how fear feels like. Fear is not a bad thing; it can help you avoid making rushed decisions in challenging situations. If you forget your deepest instincts, even for a short moment, it can mean death for you and your partner.“
He paused, noticing confusion on some faces and determinedness on others; most of the recruits, though, hung on his words, looking so proud, feeling almost invulnerable in their new uniforms. It was the same every year. Coming from the police academy, they thought of knowing everything to make the world a better place. Reality would be different, he knew that, and some of them wouldn't make it through the first months.
He smiled. Today was not the day to think about this. Tomorrow was early enough. „Welcome to the New York Police Department,“ he finished his speech only some minutes later, and the new recruits threw their caps in the air, cheering loudly.
