Feeling nervous, Casey stepped closer to the bench. „Excuse me,“ he started.
The older man on the bench opened his eyes. „“Yes? Is there anything I can do for you?“
„I am wondering...“ Casey paused, licking his lips. Well knowing that he overstepped some lines here. But he couldn't get rid of the idea anymore that this was the chance he had looked for. „I am wondering... if you don't mind, I would like to take some pictures of you.“
Silence for a long while. The grey eyes of the man looked him up and down. „A picture of me,“ he finally repeated, his voice gently, not angry. „As if I am an attraction in a zoo?“
„Oh... No, of course not!“ Now, Casey blushed deeply. What the heck was he doing here? „Excuse me, I'm sorry!“
In a hurry, he turned around, wanted to run out of the old waiting room, but the man held him back. „Just a moment, young man, you piqued my curiosity. So, what is this about? What's so interesting about a homeless old man sleeping on a bench?“ Looking for hold at the wall, he sat up. „Or maybe it is the wheelchair?“
„None of this,“ Casey murmured, feeling even more embarrassed.„It's just... I still need some pics for my college application. My art teacher told me that my photography is not bad, but too dull to earn lots of interest. That I will have to find a more unique theme to make it into a private journalistic school.“
„Understand!“ A smile sneaked on the man's lips. „Private school. A young boy with ambitions. That's good. So, will you tell me more about your plans?“
„My plans?“
„The photos of me, you want to use them for your application?“
Casey shrugged. „I thought of a photo report about homeless people in Herrington. About their life, about all the difficulties they have to deal with. It's time to rouse up people so that...“ He paused, looking from the wheelchair to the older man on the bench, biting his lower lip. „This is not right. You shouldn't be forced to live like that.“
„You know,“ the smile on the man's face deepened. „Sometimes things are not as they look. Interested in my story? I have a little time right now; you could take some photos, and we can chat.“
