„How is he doing?“
When Elrond stepped into the dimly lit room, Gandalf turned around. „He drifts away into the darkness more and more with every hour,“ he said, his voice full of grief. „It will need all the healing power of the elves to bring him back.“
The elven king looked at the small hobbit, lying on the much too big bed. The face pale, his forehead covered with sweat, his body cringing in pain. The end was coming closer. „Getting hurt by a cursed knife breaks the strongest man.“ Elrond gently touched the bandaged shoulder, feeling the heat radiating. „It might not be enough what I can do.“
„It's the only chance we have. Frodo must bring the ring to Mordor.“
Elrond shook his head. „Men did fail, elves did fail, you did fail. How can you think that a little hobbit can do what even the bravest of us weren't able to do?“
A faint smile sneaked on the old wizard's lips. „Never underestimate a hobbit, they might look weak and small, but they can accomplish things that not even an elf can imagine.” Gandalf got serious again. “He needs your help now. Bring him back, so that he can continue his dangerous way.”
After a long while of silence, Elrond finally nodded. “I will do my best,” he agreed. “When he survives this week, I will convene a council. Representatives from all free folks shall come together, and we will decide what will happen to the ring and with the hobbit.”
