They found the big, black and white dog in the middle of the forest, alone, half starved, his fur matted. He stared at them for a while with dark eyes, growling slightly. Daryl had already lifted his crossbow when Beth touched his arm to stop him.

Only a gentle touch, but it made his heart beat faster. He was unsure if he liked this; no one besides her had ever made him feel like this.

„Don't,“ she whispered. „He's not a danger; he's just afraid of us.“

And before Daryl could stop her, she hunkered down and reached out with her hand. „Hey, come here.“

The dog's snout trembled visibly, but he didn't make any try to snap shut. Beth smiled while she gently touched him. He snuggled closer, wagging his tail. „Oh, that's such a good boy.“ Then she turned back to Daryl, who was still watching the scene warily. „See, no danger. No need to be afraid of him.“

„Hm!“ Daryl smirked and lowered the crossbow. „I never was afraid of dogs. When I was about ten years old I owned one.“

„Oh, yeah?“

„For some days only. I did hide him under the porch. Shared my meals with him.“

The smile on her face vanished, and he almost regretted that he had told her about this. „What's happened,“ she asked.

„One day, he was gone.“ For sure, he wouldn't tell her the whole truth. It would have been much too cruel.

She seemed to know anyway. „I'm sorry,“ she said. Though she didn't know anything about his past. Which was a good thing. She grew up on a farm with a caring family around, not with a father who was always drunk and hit his wife and his two children until the loss of consciousness. Despite everything that was happening around her, she still found some good in the world. She must be an angel.

Suddenly, he couldn't bear his overwhelming feelings any longer. „Maybe we should better go back to the prison. Before the others start to worry.“

One last stroke over the back of the animal, then she nodded. „Guess you are right.“ When she stood up, the dog looked at her hopefully. „No, you can't come with us,“ she told him, apologetic. „As much as I like you, the prison is not a good place for a dog. Better enjoy your freedom.“

„Seems as if he's of another opinion,“ Daryl said. „Can't blame him. Apparently, he's lost his heart to you."

Beth hesitated. „Rick won't appreciate it when we bring home a dog but only some rabbits and vegetables for our lunch.“

Daryl put on one of his rare smiles. „Don't worry. I will tell him that the yield will be much better next time with a well-trained gun dog. C'mon boy, let's go home.“

The dog barked once while Beth beamed at him. It was long ago that Daryl had felt that good.

Word Count: 226
Prompt: The Walking Dead, Daryl/ Carol , it's Christmas be happy
Finished: December 2016

:::

A Christmas tree?“
Surprised, Daryl stared at Carol. When she had asked him to go into the nearby woods with her, he had thought she was looking for herbage or some vegetables for their next dinner, but this?

Carol smiled.
„Well, it's Christmas Eve. We should have a tree.“

„That's ridiculous. Who cares about Christmas in times like these? It's only important to survive the next day.“

„I don't think so. We should try not to completely forget our traditions. They make us what we are; they make us human."

Almost angry, Daryl shook his head. „The only tradition I can remember is that my dad got drunk daily, and Merle and I had to hide somewhere in the garden. It was cold, and the snow almost reached the roof. I could see the lights in the houses of the neighborhood, children were laughing, singing. Merry Christmas anywhere. Just not for us.

So don't expect me to say: Hey, it's Christmas, let us be happy.“

Gently, Carol put her hand on Daryl's arm. She could feel him trembling, knowing it was not because of the cold.

„It's not too late,“ she murmured. „To learn about the true spirit of Christmas. I will read the Christmas story to the children later. You could join us if you want.“

He had insisted on burying her body all alone; he couldn't bear it to see the grief and the pity in the other's eyes. Everyone had liked Beth, who could not, but he had loved her with all his heart, preposterous to every reason.

Now she was gone, and the loneliness was harder to endure than ever before. When he noticed footsteps coming closer, he didn't even need to turn around to know it was Carol.

"Come back to the camp," she said in her always soft voice. "I've set aside some soup for you."

"I'm not hungry."

"Pucky." She loved to call him like that, so he had never protested. Though this nickname was absolutely ridiculous. "Beth would have hated it to see you in this state."

"Beth would have hated seeing anyone in this state," Daryl murmured. "She wasn't made for a life in a world like this. Much too small, too fragile, too good. She was an angel, forced to live in hell."

Frantically, he banged his fist against the tree beside him, not taking any notice of the pain and the blood running down his fingers. "It's not fair! She was way too young to die."

Carol thought about Sophia, Lizzy, Mika, and many others who died, all of them much too young. No, it wasn't fair; nothing happening in this world was fair. She closed her eyes for a moment, fighting the pictures in her mind.

"Maybe she is in a better place now," she said.

Daryl narrowed his eyes and stared at her almost threateningly. "A better place? Are you serious?"

"I've lost every hope after Sophia's death," Carol admitted. "I didn't care about anything anymore; I was just an empty shell without any sympathy. Beth finally reached out to me; despite everything going on around, she has never stopped believing in our future. She gave me hope."

She paused for a moment before continuing. "I don't want to go back into the darkness again, full of hate and loneliness. I want to look forward because Beth would like us to do this.

It's most difficult in the evening when the camp finally comes to ease. When I close my eyes, all the memories come back; I can see them dying. Mika. Sophia. Again and again.

Then, it helps to think about anything else; something positive that came out of all this horror. A place where they all are together now; a good place, full of peace and happiness."

She noticed Daryl's still skeptical eyes resting on her and smiled slightly. "No, I don't believe in God. Not anymore. But it's a gracious dream which helps me through every night."

Title: The Vegetable Garden
Character: Daryl Dixon, Beth Greene
Prompt: any apocalypse-based fandom, any, finding a vegetable garden
Rating: PG
Word Count: 430
Finished: November 2016

:::

This afternoon, Carol had discovered the small vegetable garden behind an old farm. Potatoes, carrots, beans, even some pears and apples. Together with the rabbits Daryl shot in the morning, they had had a great meal; now they were sitting around the campfire, sated and comfortable, chatting, laughing, almost as if they were on a camping trip.

It was then that Daryl missed Beth. He stood up to look after her and finally found her in the garden, cowering on the ground between the carrots and potatoes. She didn't move, and panic started to creep into his body, but when he put his hand on her shoulder, she flinched back.

"Hey, it's okay," he reassured her. "It's just me." She nodded, but he wasn't sure if she recognized him. When he pulled her up she looked scared like a deer in the headlight.

"Come back to the fire," he tried to coax her. "It's pretty chilly tonight."

Suddenly, she threw her arms around him and broke into tears. Feeling helpless, all Daryl could do was to hold her and stroke her back. He had never been good with words. Finally, she started to calm down again; she wiped her eyes and looked up at him.

"Sorry," she whispered.

Daryl cleared his throat. "It's okay, I guess."

A faint smile sneaked on her lips, and he couldn't help but stare at them. So soft, so warm, he wondered how they would feel like when he would kiss her.

"It was the vegetable garden," she said."It reminds me of my grandma and our summer at her farm. We loved to sneak out late at night when we were supposed to sleep to snuck some apples, cherries, or strawberries. She always pretended not to notice it, but later, she came to our room to ensure we were safely back in our beds. She kissed us on the temple and said: 'Now, sleep well, honey; tomorrow will be another great day.'"

Beth paused and finally shrugged. "Not sure anymore if this ever happened. It feels like a dream; much too perfect to be true.

But I wish I could go back there, hide in my bed, and wait for her to come. I always knew nothing bad would ever happen to me when she was around. Without her, I feel lost.“

Her voice faded away. Without thinking about it, Daryl bent forward and kissed her forehead. "Don't worry," he murmured. "You are not alone. I won't let it happen that someone will ever hurt you."

Title: First time

Prompt: The Walking Dead, Beth Greene/Daryl Dixon, its the first time she's had sex; its the first time he's been in love
Word Count: 190
Finished: November 2016

She was still lying in his arms, asleep, a smile on her face. Daryl couldn't turn his eyes away. She was the most beautiful being he had ever seen. Beth, his angel. Untouched up to this night. She had been so shy when he had started to open the buttons of her shirt, had even blushed. But when he had asked her if she had changed her mind, she had just kissed him; her warm, soft lips on his own had made him feel dizzy.

Oh, he had always known to enjoy himself; together with Merle, he had spent a lot of nights at clubs and bars, and usually, they didn't have to go home alone. He would have called himself a good lover.

The last hour with Beth had been different from everything he had ever experienced. Not rough sex without limits. Soft, tender touches, whispered words, teasing, kissing. Tears in her eyes, but a smile on her lips when he finally did the last step.

And he knew she was the one he had always been looking for: the one he could love.

Prompt: weechesters, puppy
Sam was sitting on the park bench, watching a girl playing with her dog. When he was five, his biggest wish had been a puppy. All he had gotten was an ugly stuffed bear. He had fought his tears back. The next day, he dumped this embarrassing thing into a bin at a service station. And he had never asked for a pet again.

"Benny, no," the girl called when the puppy curiously nuzzled at his legs.

"It's okay," Sam laughed. "I like dogs."

It was the family's job to be on the road, hunting monsters. But sometimes, he still dreamed about having a home one day, a girl who loved him, and a puppy.

Prompt: Benny/ Samandirel, we have Time

Sometimes, he hated that, as a vampire, he didn't need to sleep; that meant no dreams that could give him at least some comfort for a short moment.

„We have time,“ Samandriel had told him. „The eternity is ours.“

And then he was gone, and he never came back. All he had left behind was endless loneliness.

Prompt: Dean/Crowley, dangerous game

And once again, he allowed them to escape. Despite knowing better. The Winchesters and the King of Hell could never become friends.

But he had a soft spot for Dean since their first encounter. It was like a game, a dangerous one, but since when could any danger scare him?

Prompt: Samandirel / Benny, road trip

He was on earth for much too long already. But to be on the road with 'his angel' made him feel good, at least for a while.

Prompt: he thinks he might have liked Ben to be his son

Dean always looked forward. Because looking back did only hurt. Too many memories, too many people he had lost, too many fights which had almost broken him. But sometimes, in the bunker, the only place he called home, the only place where he could find some rest, at least for a moment, he allowed himself to dream.

Lisa and Ben. He could imagine them being this family. They would live in a house with a garden. Visiting Ben's school events. He could teach him to repair a car, give him his first driving lessons.

This was what he regretted most. That Ben was not his son.

Prompt: Benny/ Samandirel, dance with me

The vampire freed himself from the arms of his angelic lover and stepped back while he tried to avoid eye contact.

Confused and slightly scared, Samandriel watched him, wondering what he had done wrong this time; as much as he loved Benny, sometimes it was difficult to understand what was going on in the vampire's mind. And it was so easy to hurt him. But he had just asked him for a dance, they were both alone, the music coming from the radio was just too sweet to resist.

"I cannot dance," Benny finally murmured after a long silence; his eyes dark of embarrassment.

For a split second, Samandriel felt the urge to laugh with relief when suddenly a deep sadness hit him; Benny had lived on this earth for hundreds of years, and he had never danced before with someone he loved.

He went over to him, smiling reassuringly while gently pulling him back into his arms; "Well," he whispered, "I guess it's never too late to change this."

Prompt: Benny/Samandirel, my life would suck without you

'I'm so sorry," Benny murmured, holding his lover tight in his arms, "I had no right to destroy your life."

The angel smiled softly. "You didn't," he reassured him," without your love, my life would still suck."

Prompt: Dean / Castiel, Comfort
Castiel had been sitting at Dean's bedside for hours now, hoping that he might wake up. But deep inside, he knew well enough that his company wouldn't be enough to work on this wonder. All Dean needed was his brother, but Sam was gone forever.

Prompt: Sam, Gabriel; payback
He had thought about it all the time, what he would do with him when they met again; after all he had done to Dean, he hated him with all his heart, but when it finally happened, the archangel looked so miserable that Sam only could feel pity.

Prompt: Sam, Gabriel; risky game (1 sentence)
It was a risky game they were playing, but that actually was the reason why they enjoyed it even more.

Prompt: trust
It was hard to believe. Zeke was a loner, he trusted no one. But when Casey looked into his eyes now, he knew, that Zeke was ready to trust him.

Prompt: cosmically connected
Casey tiptoed to kiss his boyfriend; he looked so terribly lost that he almost wished to be able to change his plans.

„No matter what comes, we are cosmically connected, and nothing can change this!“

Finally, Zeke smiled.
„Just come back to me in one piece, geek boy!“

Prompt: relic
Zeke eyed him grinning; no, not much had changed; still the same geek.
„Get it, you are a relic hunter now. But where are your fedora and the bullwhip?“

Prompt: soulmate tattoo
Zeke looked into Casey's determined, sparkling eyes and smirked.
"You sure?"

"Yeah. Everyone can know that we are soulmates."

"Your dad will probably kill me when you come home with a tattoo."

Casey laughed and kissed him."Don't worry, my mom will hold him back; she loves you to pieces."

Prompt: Birthday wishes via Twitter (140 characters only)
Hey, geek boy. So you made it. Finally 18. Wanna celebrate tonight? My house. Have the champagne and the condoms. Ready to take the risk? Z.

Prompt: mother knows best
Shocked, Casey stared at his mother. Had she just asked him to invite Zeke Tyler next weekend for the Connor's family dinner? What did she know? Wherefrom did she know? This couldn't be. They had always been extremely cautious.

The king and the geek. It almost sounded like a fairy tale. And the dreamworld would break in like a cardhouse the moment the secret was disclosed. A coming out in Herrington was impossible.

As if she could read his mind, his mom smiled reassuringly.
„Don't worry, Case. A mother knows her son best, and she will always keep his secrets.“

Prompt: break up
Casey was fighting with tears while he stammered:" You can't be serious, you can't break up with me, you have said, that you love me."

Zeke forced himself to stay calm; this was much more difficult than he had pictured it, but it was the only way to convince Casey that it was about time to move on; to leave Herrington behind, to go to MIT and start with the great future he had always dreamed about before he had met Zeke.

"Don't be stupid; love is just an overused word; how can you take this seriously? " he lied, and he knew, at the moment Casey had left his house, he would break down.

Prompt: party all the time
Zeke leaned back in his chair, the pencil in his mouth, without caring about Mr. Furlong, who tried to teach the students everything about photosynthesis.

"What a stupid shit," Casey thought, watching him secretly.
"All he can think about is party, party, party all the time. But he looks very sexy in this new, tight denims."

Suddenly, Zeke looked up; their eyes met; the grin on Zeke's lips deepened even more, and Casey knew he was blushing.

Prompt: why didn't you tell me?
Zeke stared at Casey with narrowed eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me you plan to move to Boston after graduation?"

He shrugged, pretending to be calmer than he actually was. He hadn't thought that it would be so difficult.
„Didn't think you would care. You don't do serious relationships, remember?“

Zeke swallowed; of course, he could remember all the shit he had said again and again. Because he had been much too afraid to admit the truth. Would it be too late now?

„I don't want you to go,“ he murmured.

„Why?“

„Because I love you.“

Prompt: stargazing
"You want what?" Zeke stared at his best friend, dumbfounded, still unsure if he had gotten it right. Casey had just asked him for a date tonight?

The boy giggled hilariously; his blue eyes sparkled amused when he answered:"Zeke, stargazing has nothing to do with romantic shit; it's a serious science, and the constellation of the stars tonight is a fascinating one. You don't want to miss this."

"Oh," was all Zeke said, and he needed a moment to fight his disappointment back.

Zeke pulled him back into his arms again to kiss him; not a rough, demanding kiss full of lust and want, but soft and gentle this time. His tongue was stroking and licking; his teeth were nibbling gently. Casey had closed his eyes to enjoy the sensation.

It didn't happen often that Zeke talked about his feelings. Much too afraid that his dream would crash like a card house in the wind in the moment he spoke of it.

Casey smiled when Zeke ended his teasing with a quick peck on his nose. It had been not easy to accept at first, but then he realized it. Zeke didn't need to call out his love; he showed it in so many different ways.

Casey was lying in Zeke's arms; his eyes closed, his head resting on Zeke's broad shoulders. He loved it when they were hanging out on the old couch in Zeke's garage like that, and he could let his mind wander.

„What do you think,“ he asked. „What will happen on the last page of our story?“

Zeke smiled. „It's just half the fun when you already know the end, don't you think so?“

„My mom always reads the last page of a novel at first because she doesn't like sad endings.“

„Don't worry.“ Zeke bent forward to kiss him. „I will do my best that our story will have a happy end.“

As ever, Blaine looked as if nothing could bother him; his long legs stretched out, and he had a smug grin on his lips. And as ever, Liv suddenly felt the urge to strangle him. „How can you still enjoy yourself after all you have done,“ she asked. „You destroyed the lives of so many people; you killed innocent kids.“

Blaine sipped at his Whiskey. „I wouldn't call it killing. It is more like culling pigs; the weak and sick have to go to ensure the survival of the fittest. Without businessmen like me, everything would have gotten out of control long ago. And the zombies would rule the town.“

„Do you believe your own words?“

The blunt disdain in Liv's voice made him cringe inwardly. He stared at his now empty glass. Usually, he didn't care much what others thought about him. But with Liv, it had always been different. Maybe it was because she had been the first one he had turned into a zombie. Maybe it was because she was different from anyone he had ever met, as a zombie and man.

She had learned to live as a zombie without harming other people. He had never wasted a moment's thought on the lives he destroyed. It had been so easy; he only had to find a fitting brain by a ruthless, brutal monster. Only one bite of it and all the twinges of conscience he might have had did vanish into thin air.

He grabbed the Whiskey bottle to pour in another one and raised a toast to her. „Here's to you,“ he said, „and to life!“

Now, he was human again because of Liv, and it became more difficult to escape his nightmares. But this was something he would never admit.

It was nothing new that Zeke sometimes skipped school, though he usually was around for chemistry. „What a shit,“ Casey thought, staring at the empty chair beside him. As Zeke's lab partner, he knew that the older boy had a brilliant mind, and for some reason, he felt disappointed that Zeke had decided to waste his last chance to graduate. Though it was not his business, of course not; they had nothing in common, and they barely shared a word outside of the lab. So, what did he care? He huffed silently and opened his book.

Then, at lunchbreak, rumors suddenly started going around at school. A horrible car accident in the early morning. A black GTO involved, the driver seriously hurt. Casey had to close his eyes briefly, forcing himself to stay calm. Not Zeke, no, this was impossible. Everyone knew that Zeke was a good driver. He would never risk too much, even if he sometimes overstepped the lines. Casey couldn't take his eyes away from the cafeteria door, hoping the boy would show up there in the next moment, with the usual smug grin on his lips.

„I have heard they took Zeke to the hospital.“ Two girls, sitting at the next table, one with long, blonde hair, the other with brown curls and glasses. „I can't believe it. That's so unfair. He promised to come to my birthday party next weekend.“

„Oh, Mary Ann, don't be stupid. He only agreed because he didn't want to hurt your feelings. But actually he is only interested in me, that's so obvious.“

„He says I have pretty eyes.“

The other girl threw her hair back and shrugged. „He compliments every girl like that. But we did spend a night together last month. I can't believe that...“ She sniffed, but it sounded like a fake in Casey's ears. „I can't believe that I will never see him again.“

He cringed inwardly and closed his book. Enough was enough; he wouldn't endure this shallow gossip talk any longer. What he needed was a certainty.

:::

About half an hour later, he parked his bike in front of the big white house on Sunset Avenue. No GTO far and wide. His heart sunk deeper, though he tried to call himself an overreacting idiot. Zeke would probably have something better to do when he decided not to come to school. Maybe he was on one of his long road tours.

„Hey! What the heck are you doing here?“

The voice made Casey jump; with a wild, pondering heart, he turned around. And there he was. Zeke Tyler, a cigarette in his hand, and much too good-looking in his tight black denim and long-sleeved shirt. No injuries at all. Casey couldn't move, more shocked than relieved to see him.

„Shouldn't you be at school?“

„Shouldn't you be at school, too, you fucker,“ Casey yelled back.

Zeke stepped closer, grinning wide. „Woah. What's happened, geek boy?“

„This is not fun, Zeke. Everyone at school... they are talking about it, that you have had an accident. Seriously hurt. Maybe... “ It was so hard to hold back his tears for longer. „Oh shit! You... you...“

„Hey. Breath.“ Reassuring, Zeke put his hand on Casey's shoulder. „I am here. Calm down, okay? No accident. No hospital. I am fine. And I can tell you, I plan that it stays like that.“

„Asshole!“ Casey sniffed. „Why the hell didn't you come to school today?“

Zeke shrugged. „The GTO. Needed a check-up. Still in the garage. And I was not crazy about using the school's bus.“

Suddenly realizing the nearness between them, Casey shrugged Zeke's hand off. „Great. Half of the school is running mad because they assume that you might be already dead. And you are at home, enjoying a day off? What the heck are you thinking?“

Zeke kept quiet for a moment. „I don't care much about all the rumors around me,“ he finally said, his voice more serious than before. „But I'm sorry that I did scare you.“

„I was not... why should I?“

„You are the only one who came here to find out what's happening. You even skipped school. I guess this means something.“

Involuntarily ,Casey blushed. „Don't flatter yourself,“ he murmured.

Zeke laughed slightly. „Will you come in for a moment? Looks as if you could need hot tea to relax. I don't want you to faint out right here and now on my porch.“

:::

About three hours later, Casey's eyes fell on his watch. He jumped up. „Oh. Shit. It's already that late.“

He couldn't say how this had happened, but he had probably just had the best time of his life. He was so used to being alone; he loved his photography, reading, and computer work. Others called him a nerd and a deadhead for this; no one wanted to hang around with him. But here, in Zeke's kitchen, he had laughed so much; they had talked about movies and their favorite authors. Hard to believe that Zeke loved Moby Dick and Mark Twain as he did. And they had had a serious discussion about 2001 – A Space Odyssey. Casey thought it was the most overrated science fiction movie ever, but Zeke insisted that it was a classic; one had to watch at least three or four times to get the depth of it.

Casey wished he could stay here for the rest of the day, the next days, and maybe forever, but of course, this was ridiculous. He looked for his backpack. „Guess I should go home. My mom will freak out soon; school is already over for about one hour.“

„Sorry. I would give you a ride home, but you know, the GTO...“

„That's okay.“ Suddenly, the so familiar awkwardness was back. „It's only five minutes by bike.“

„Will you get into trouble?“

Casey hesitated, then he shook his head. „No. Not when I am telling the truth. We are friends, and my parents will understand that after all these rumors, I was worried about you.“

Zeke kept quiet for a moment. „We are friends,“ he finally asked.

„Well.“ Casey shrugged, slightly embarrassed. Of course, for a short while, he had blended out the reality. „Maybe not. But we share a lab table. At least when you come to school.“

„I will be there tomorrow. Promise. Get the GTO back this afternoon, so, no reason to skip school again.“

„Don't make any promises you won't keep. You are only a stupid shit who doesn't give much about his future.“

„Hm.“ Zeke eyed him thoughtfully. „I still don't get it. Why do you care for me?“

„I don't!“ Casey turned around and grabbed his backpack to hide his red face.

„But you are here. You call me a friend." Zeke laughed slightly. "If I will be at school tomorrow and every other day until graduation, it's because of you.“
