Feeling worn out, Markus let his eyes wander through his small office and stopped at the yellowed map with its many marked red places. It seemed to get more and more with every day. As hard as he tried, the war with the skinheads and other renegade groups was unavoidable. They loved the chaos and the fight too much to accept the territory of others.

For years, Markus had managed to make the Mountain a safe place for so many people: men, women, and children. He had promised them a better future where they could live in peace. How miserably he had failed. How could he have believed that he was a good leader? A good leader wouldn't let it happen that good people had to die in a hopeless fight.

„Here you are!“ Erin's gentle voice tore him out of his reverie. „They are all waiting for you in the cafeteria.“

He didn't dare turn around to her, not wanting her to see the desperation in his eyes. But he could hear her stepping closer. She put a hand on his shoulder. „Don't do that,“ she whispered.

Markus smiled weakly; as ever, she knew what was going on in him. „We will survive this night,“ she continued. „The Mountain will not fall. Because of you. Because it made us strong enough to believe in the good in the world.“

„The good might not be strong enough to win this last fight. The skinheads are cruel. Merciless. They don't leave any survivors behind.“

„Smith says God won't sleep tonight.“

Markus kept quiet. Was this good? Was this bad? He didn't know. He didn't even know what to think about this strange little guy who insisted on being God's messenger. Lots of strange prophecies; some of them true, some of them not. Some had saved a life; some had taken one. God won't sleep tonight. Whatever this was supposed to mean, he was the leader of the Mountain, and his people needed him tonight more than ever before.

He got up from his chair and nodded. „I am ready now!“
