Casey stretched out his hand to help the other boy stand up. „You okay?“
„Yeah, thanks.“
„Gabe is an idiot. Better stay out of his way in the future; he likes to bully everyone who is not a big football fan. I guess you are not?“
A shy smile appeared on the boy's face when he shook his head. „Is it that obvious?“
Casey's eyes rested on the old leather folder with a golden print the boy held close to his chest. „Yup. What's this, a music score?“
„The Magic Flute. The most favorite opera of my dad.“ The smile vanished, brown eyes looked sad. „It's all I've left of him. He always wanted me to go to Austria one day, visit the boarding school for music in the Alps, like he did once.
'I know, Tim, you are stronger than I was back then, strong enough to face the mystery going on there.' His last words to me.“ He paused and shrugged. „Sounds pretty weird, doesn't it? Well, I guess I will never go to Austria. My stepmother forced me to see a shrink, and he thinks it's best for me to make a new start far away from home. Far away from any kind of music. So, she sent me to some distant relatives living here, in Herrington.“
„Sounds not fair.“ Casey eyed him with pity; then he made a decision. „But hey, I will meet some friends today for a movie night. They are pretty okay; so, if you want to join us, you are welcome.“
Tim hesitated. „You sure they want to hang around with a geek like me?“
Casey kept quiet for a moment, thinking about the last years when he had still been the favorite victim of the football player; Stokely had been called a lesbian gothic bitch, and Zeke had pretended to be the unconcerned rebel. None of them had had many friends; all of them had known loneliness all too well. Until the alien incident had changed everything last autumn.
It was too early to talk about all this with Tim, but it was not too early to show him that life as a geek was so much easier to endure when you were not alone.
„You will belong to us perfectly,“ Casey reassured Tim, and the boy finally showed a wide smile again. „Okay. Thank you, then. A movie night sounds great.“
