„Jeremiah!“ Kurdy stepped forward, grabbing for the young man's shoulder. „Stop! Leave him alone!“

Grey eyes sparkled, annoyed, and for a moment, Kurdy was sure that Jeremiah was about to beat him down now. „I've warned him to stay out of my way!“

„This doesn't make it better. It's almost a year now; maybe you should start to forgive.“

„He has killed her! How can I forgive this?“

Kurdy sighed; he hated getting roped into this again and again. Jeremiah had been his partner and friend for a long time now. They had survived on the roads together before finally finding refuge at the Mountain. They had been a great team, even if they didn't always agree.

Until Smith showed up, insisting that he was a messenger of God, sent to the Mountain to keep an eye on Kurdy. Jeremiah hated him from the very first moment, and also Kurdy was mistrustful at first. But Smith had saved his life and the lives of many other people in the Mountain.

Yes, he had killed Libby. A young woman, always friendly, alway laughing. She had helped at the hospital ward, taught the children at school, organized the New Year's surprise party together with Erin. Everyone had liked her. Jeremiah had loved her.

No one had seen the truth behind her angelic smile. No one but Smith. What he finally did probably saved the Mountain, Markus' dream of a better future, and everyone living here. When the first shock about Libby's betrayal started to vanish, most people were willing to accept the truth. No one blamed Smith anymore; even Lee, the security agent of the Mountain, who never trusted anyone quickly, was finally willing to overlook Smith's sometimes weird behavior. Only Jeremiah could not forget.

„Let it rest; it's okay.“ Smith finally managed to get back on his feet again; still a bit wobbly, he looked for a hold at the wall.

„Shut up! The last I need is your sympathy.“ Jeremiah stared at him with dark eyes, before leaving the cafeteria with long strides.

Kurdy looked after him, then turned around to Smith. His left eye swollen, he kneaded his arm cautiously. „Are you okay?“

„Nothing serious.“

„I wish he would finally accept that Libby never was the woman she pretended to be. Holding on to the past never is a good idea, especially not in times like these.“

„It's better for him to hate me than to hate himself.“ Smith grabbed the old backpack from the ground and slung it over his shoulder. „Deep inside, he blames himself for being so blind. He took her to the Mountain without knowing much about her; he only saw a desperate young woman who needed his help. He fell for an angel and didn't notice the evil hiding behind her mask. The evil which could easily have been the end of the Mountain."

Smith shook his head. "I'm afraid he will never be able to forgive himself. Have an eye on him; he needs a good friend before he gets lost in the darkness of hate.“
