Half curious, half uneasy, Zeke looked around in the kitchen area of the Connors. As he had always expected it, clean and tidy, but a bit outdated, compared with the modern kitchen in the Tyler's house; his mom had spent lots of money on the renovation only last year, though Zeke couldn't remember that he had ever seen her preparing a meal or even doing the dishes. Mrs. Connor, for sure, was different; she loved to cook and bake and spoil her beloved family.

Casey stepped closer, a bright smile on his face and two colorful mugs in his hand. „Coffee for you,“ he said, placing one in front of Zeke.

He stared at the bright green mug with the saying: Mummy's Favorite Mug. Secretly, he cringed. Holy shit! Could it get even worse?

„Do you need milk or sugar?“

„Ähmm... no, thanks.“

„Okay!“ Casey dropped on a chair opposite him, sipping his hot tea.

Silence, uncomfortable silence. Zeke grabbed his mug and cursed inwardly when burning his tongue; the coffee was hot, much too hot, and bitter as gall. What the hell was he actually doing here? What had gotten into him that he had accepted the invitation? And how could he get out of this situation without hurting Casey?

Because, to be honest, he actually had enjoyed the afternoon together with Casey much more than expected. The boy had been surprisingly talkative; they had discussed many weird theories for their physics project and finally decided to base their work on a supposed meteor impact at Herrington in the year 2056.

„This is so geeky,“ Casey had giggled, and Zeke had grinned back at him. „Better geeky than the usual boring stuff. I am sure good old Furlong will know to appreciate this.“

After they had finished their research work at the library, Casey had invited him for a coffee at home, and when he had accepted without even thinking about it, the boy blushed slightly as if he suddenly realized what he had done. But it had been too late for both of them already.

„Zeke?“

Casey's voice tore him out of his thoughts. „Hm?“

The boy looked at him with a smirk. „Okay, guess this was a stupid idea.“

„What do you mean?“

Casey shrugged. „This. You, here in my kitchen. Sorry. But this afternoon, hanging around with you for a while was so surprisingly great. As if...“ He paused, looking for words. „As if we are friends. But we are not. It is just a stupid homework, and I guess you will be glad when it is done.“

Zeke eyed him thoughtfully, finally, he relaxed. „I don't mind working together with you. But tomorrow, we better meet in my garage.“

„Tomorrow?“ Casey looked almost shocked. „Your garage?" The garage was Zeke's secret sanctuary, no one had ever seen.

„We still need to finish the homework, and my computer is high tech; not as lame as this thing at the school's library.“ Zeke grinned. „And this coffee...“ He pointed at the mug in front of him. „Well, you might know a lot about physics, but, sorry, Case, this brew is horrible.“

Casey stared at him with his eyes wide open; then he started giggling. „I know. Sorry. That's why I prefer tea.“
