Tears were sparkling in Gabriela's eyes; she didn't dare to look at Bode. She had already dreamed about a future with him, where they both would be free to go wherever they wanted. No longer some stolen moments because Bode had to follow the rules when he didn't want to risk getting sent back to prison.
Today should have been the chance for a new beginning, the day of his official hearing, which should have been his ticket to leave his past behind. But it had gone terribly wrong; his drug test, which was supposed to be only a matter of formality, had been positive.
„What have you done,“ Gabriela finally managed to whisper. „How could you...“
He looked miserable while weakly shaking his head. „I know, it sounds like a lame excuse, but I didn't do anything wrong. I wanted to be free, for you, for us; I would never have risked this.“
Tears started to flow; Bode wanted to step closer, pull her into his arms, but his hands were handcuffed behind his back, and the hard grip of Manny Perez, the supervisor of the prisoners at the fire camp, almost his friend, Gabriela's father, stopped him.
Time to go,“ he said, his voice cold. „This camp offered you more than just one chance, but obviously, you haven't changed in the slightest. Here is no room for you any longer.“
"Sorry," Bode whispered soundlessly, and Gabriela sobbed slightly while he turned to the prisoner van and got in.
