No! For a short moment, Olivia needed to look for hold at the giant oak tree beside her. She had already seen so much during all the years she was working for the New York Police Department. But to find the bones of the little boy, Peter, here, in the woods, covered with leaves and sand, was almost too much.
Deep inside, she had known the truth for a while already; it would have been a wonder when he would still have been alive after all the time, and she had already stopped believing in wonder a long time ago. But she hadn't been able to get the photo out of her head: the photo of a little boy, happily smiling, a teddy in his arms. For a moment, she had thought it was Noah, the same smile, the same blonde hair, blue eyes. Noah! She cringed inwardly.
"Olivia?!
Fin's low voice tore her out of her reverie. "I'm okay," she murmured and turned around to the coroner who was just coming down the way. Soon, she would go home and hug the little boy she had adopted only some weeks ago tightly. She would bathe him, sing to him, this little lullaby he loved so much. And finally, he would fall asleep in her arms, being safe and happy.
Like a little boy was supposed to be.
