:::
Casey closed the door behind himself and dropped down on his bed. October 15, a hard day for him.
There had been different times when he had spent the weekends on his grandfather's farm. How much he had loved it. It always came with a lot of work: digging up the sweet potatoes and the carrots. Harvesting the pumpkins and the cabbage. Raking the leaves in the orchard.
But what did he care? The trees were covered with the most colorful leaves. The smell of pumpkin soup was coming out of the kitchen. And he was together with his beloved grandfather, who always came up with the best ideas.
In his garage, they created feeders for the birds and hedgehog houses; they piled up the fallen leaves for a great bonfire in the evening. They craved the scariest pumpkin faces. They talked and laughed all day long.
Casey felt tears burning in his eyes while remembering these times. They would never come back. His grandfather died two years ago, on October 15, a stroke occurred to him out of the blue. His parents decided to sell the farm only some months later. And Casey had been sure that he would never be able to enjoy fall again.
Today though...
Pensively, he bit his lower lip while thinking about Zeke's suggestion to visit the Corn Maze and Fall Festival of Brownsville this weekend. He wasn't sure what this was supposed to mean. Yes, they had met now and then after school since the alien incident. And yes, he enjoyed hanging around with Zeke. Zeke was different than the others; with him, he could almost forget what had happened on that horrible night only some months ago.
Usually, they had met in Zeke's house, for a pizza or a cheesy movie; a ride home from school once or twice. But a weekend trip to Idaho? To visit a fall festival? Casey had to admit he had never thought that Zeke, the cool boy from school, would be interested in something like this. And he was curious to find out the reason for his surprising idea.
But Saturday would be October 15. The day he had dreaded most for two years. When he went to Idaho with Zeke, wouldn't it be like a betrayal of his grandfather?
Inwardly sighing, he shook his head; no, he couldn't go and have fun, not this weekend. But when he went upstairs to the phone to call Zeke, he suddenly could hear it. His grandfather's voice, telling him it was okay to move on with his life.
For a moment Casey stiffened in every movement, then he relaxed. Thank you, grandpa, he tought. I will always love you.
