„Have you seen the shining in the air last night,“ Erin asked. „I wonder what this was about.“
„God keeps quiet,“ the little guy in his worn-out coat answered.
„And this is a good or a bad sign?“
Smith smiled silently. „ I don't know. I guess I will find out when he thinks it's important for me to know.“
„Seems as if it is not easy to be God's messenger.“ Erin placed a cup of coffee on the table in front of him.
„It's not,“ Smith agreed, placing his fingers around the warm cup. „Thank you, Erin.“
„I wish I could do more for you. But Lee says...“
„Lee does a good job; he keeps the danger away from the Mountain.“ He took a sip of his coffee and sighed with pleasure. "You shouldn't blame him."
„You are not a danger,“ Erin protested.
Thoughtfully Smith shook his head. „I don't know what I am. I can't even remember my name or my life before the Big Death. Maybe it is better to be careful.“ He stood up, grabbing for the big backpack beside his chair. „I will come back and tell you when I find out more about the shining at night,“ he promised.
Then he was gone.
