Zeke stopped short when he noticed the young guy sitting at the bar. A plain, blue shirt, styled hair, but he looked so familiar anyway. With a grin on his face, he stepped closer. „Casey? That's a surprise.“

„Oh, hey, Zeke. It's a while.“

„Indeed.“ Zeke decided to ignore the uneasiness sparkling in deep blue eyes and slipped on the bar stool beside him. „One Heineken, please,“ he ordered a beer before eyeing his former friend thoughtfully. Something was not okay, he could sense it. „Since you are married with bitchy bitch you don't find much time for old friends anymore.“

„I'm working on my first photo exhibition.“ Casey turned back to the bar, grabbing the Whiskey glass. „This keeps me busy.“

„Yup. I've heard about it. New York, huh? And L.A. I bet Delilah is enjoying the fame you get even more than you do.“

Casey sighed deeply, and Zeke frowned. „Hey, what's wrong? You don't look as if you are overly happy with your life. Is this the reason why you hide here in good old Herrington?“

„My parents are living here,“ Casey huffed, taking another sip. „I can visit them, right?“

„Sure. I'm just wondering, why do you spend the evening alone in a bar, drinking Whiskey, instead of spending some time with your mom?“

Casey banged the empty glass back on the bar, waving the barkeeper to bring him another one. „Zeke, you are still a pain in the ass. Why can't you care about your own business?“

„Because I can still read you like an open book. Let me guess. It's Delilah, isn't it? She's not here together with you?“

Blue eyes darkened even more. „Dunno. I guess she's still in New York, selling the apartment.“

„Oh. It's that bad.“ Zeke took a sip of his beer. Of course, he could have told him now that he had always warned him. Delilah had always been a bitch, already at highschool; she had used people on her own behalf, and when she got tired of them, she dumped them without any mercy. She had never had any genuine interest in Casey, but when he shot to fame after the alien incident, she had wanted to be a part of it.

Casey had always been the outsider at school, only living for his photography; he got teased and bullied every day and not many people wanted to hang around with him. It was not a wonder; he enjoyed the sudden interest he got after saving the world. That he enjoyed that the most wanted girl at school suddenly discovered her love for him.

Zeke had tried his best to keep him grounded for a while, but Delilah and his new so-called friends had been stronger. Casey had started to drift apart, and there had been nothing he could do against it.

„Does it feel good to be right?“ The tired voice tore Zeke out of his thoughts.

„What do you think?“ He pulled the face. „I know I'm not perfect, and I did a lot of shit in my life. But triumphing when someone is already on the ground? I never was that low.“

Casey kept quiet for a while. „Yes, I know,“ he finally murmured. „Sorry, this was not fair. It's just... I am so angry about myself. I treated you like shit, though I should have known better. But I didn't want to face reality; life was just too good. So new and exciting.

Finding myself in a chapel in Las Vegas, Delilah beside me in a dark red gown, was the peak. And actually, the beginning of the end. Already our honeymoon was not chocolate and roses; we did fight a lot. But it still took almost two years until I was ready to admit that I have made some pretty stupid decisions that might ruin my future now.“

„Since when are you such a drama queen? I'm sure not everything you did during the last two years was wrong. A photo exhibition at the David Zwirner Gallery in New York? How many students have managed this before? You can be proud of yourself. And Deliah... well... you are not the first one who fell for her shit.“

Zeke put his hand on Casey's arm when he grabbed for his glass again. „C'mon on. Drowning your sorrows is not a good idea, even if it is expensive Whiskey. Maybe we could let the evening fade away with a cheesy movie and a pizza from Joey's instead. And tomorrow, the world will look much brighter again.“

„Like back then, when you picked me up on the road after Gabe and the others demolished my bike? I was so heartbroken.“ A faint smile turned up on Casey's lips. „You still own the garage?“

„Well, in the meantime, my parents signed over the house to me. But if you want to hang out in the garage... I don't mind!“
