In the early hours before dawn, he met him for the first time. Kurdy was on the hunt alone while Jeremiah was still sleeping. Despite the cold, humid air, he made his way back to the jeep cheerfully whistling with two rabbits, one opossum, and some fishes. Today they would have a decent meal, and maybe he would be able to trade in some of the fish at the small town's market nearby. Some milk, homebrewed beer, or even coffee would be more than welcome.
When the blurred figure suddenly came out of the woodwork, barring his way, he stopped alarmed, fumbling for his knife. The guy stood motionless. „No need to worry. I'm not here to harm you,“ he said, slowly stretching out his hand to show that he was unarmed.
Kurdy eyed him with narrowed eyes. „So, and what are you doing here?“
„Saving your life, I guess.“
„What?“ He huffed surprised. „The only danger I see at the moment could be you.“
The mysterious guy shrugged. „Only God knows when it will happen.“
„Duh! You are God?!“
„Do I look like God?“
Okay, this was a ridiculous talk. Even in a world like this, where you could meet wacky people almost every day. „Dunno,“ Kurdy snarled. „I've never met him before.“
„Well, I do neither. He's just a voice in my head. But when he tells me to come here, all I can do is obey. The consequences for disobedience are not nice.“
„Sounds pretty weird!“
The first sunbeams finally made their way through the trees, and Kurdy saw a smile flickering over his face. „I know,“ he agreed. „I know.“
