The day had started with perfect autumn weather.
„Do you mind me going to the park this morning,“ Casey had asked. „I know, I've promised to help you clear out the attic. But I still need some photos for my presentation at school.“
„A storm is announced for today,“ his mother had reminded him.
He had bent forward to place a fleetingly kiss on her cheek. „Later, in the evening,“ he had answered. „Don't worry, I will be back by then.“ And off he was.
Leaving time and place behind, as ever, when he was on a photo trip; there was so much he needed to discover with his camera. About two hours later, when he had used up all his films, he looked up to the sky, only to notice thick, dark clouds. The sun was gone, and despite his warm jacket, he shivered. While he stowed the camera away safely in his backpack, grabbing for his bike, the wind increased.
Great, the storm was coming much quicker than expected. Even if he would hurry up, probably he wouldn't make it home before it broke out with full force. And looking for shelter in the park didn't seem to be a good idea; his mom would already be frightened to death. Maybe... A thought crossed his mind. Sunshine Avenue was much nearer to the park, and hadn't Zeke told him only some days ago that he was always welcome at his home? He could go there, even call home to tell his mom that he was in a safe place.
But then, Casey wasn't sure if Zeke had really meant it; to be honest, it wasn't easy to look behind Zeke's mask. He was the most complicated guy Casey had ever met. The king at school, the dealer, who did sell any kind of stuff, a highschool student might dream about. No boy would dare to fuck around with him. And the girls were crazy about him, but even if he flirted with all of them, Casey wasn't sure if he actually cared about anyone. Zeke was a loner who didn't seem to have many close friends.
At lunchbreak, he sometimes hung around at the bleachers. Together with him, Casey, probably the geekiest boy at school. Then they chatted about all kinds of stuff, music, movies, books. Even art and photography. Casey enjoyed their togetherness; these moments almost felt as if they could be friends. But on other days, Zeke preferred to hang around with the others. Ignoring him. Even if he never bullied him like the jocks from the football team.
Casey pedaled as quickly as possible against the increasing wind and cold rain, but he was wet through within minutes. And he started to worry that even if his backpack was weatherproof, it might not withstand the heavy rainfall. This finally was the decisive factor – he would not risk losing the photos he had taken or even wreck his camera.
The black GTO was parking in front of Zeke's house, but there was no light inside. Casey blinked the rain away, which blocked his view, and tried hard to fight his tears. „Fuck, fuck, fuck,“ he murmured. And feeling much too exhausted to go on, he decided to take a short break on the porch; at least it would offer some shelter against wind and rain.
„Hey, what the hell are you doing there?“
Zeke's sharp voice, coming from behind, made him stop. „Oh, you are...“
„Casey? What's happened?“
He leaned his bike at the big tree near the garage and stepped closer.„Storm. I was in the park for some photos when it caught me off guard. I couldn't make it home in time.“
„Oh shit! Get your stupid ass in here, geez.“ Zeke grabbed for his arm and pulled him inside. „Stay where you are; you are dripping wet. Didn't you hear the weather forecast?“
„It didn't sound that bad,“ Casey murmured while he couldn't help but check out his surroundings full of awe. A fully equipped lab; so maybe the rumors at school were true, and Zeke was producing his own drugs?! Woah.
„Hey! Don't be so snoopy.“
„Äh, sorry.“ Casey turned around and grabbed for the towel Zeke held out to him. „Thanks. I... I won't tell...“
„Of course, you won't.“ Zeke pulled his face, slightly amused when he noticed Casey's uneasiness. „Relax, it's not what you are thinking.“ He stepped closer to the lab table and held up a pen filled with a white powder. „Scat. These dumbheads at school are crazy about it and willing to pay a shitload of money. But it's only a mixture of harmless pills you can buy at every drugstore. Wanna try?“
Casey shook his head. „Äh... no!“
Zeke only laughed. „Get it. I would offer you a beer now, but maybe you prefer a hot tea to warm up?“
„I am fine. But can I make a quick phone call, please? I need to call my mom; probably she's already freaking out because I'm not home yet.“
Zeke hesitated before pulling a cellphone out of his pocket. „Okay. But maybe better don't tell her that you are here.“
Casey looked up, slightly frowning. „She will ask.“
„Geez, Casey.“ Zeke rolled his eyes. „Tell her that you are at the library or a coffee shop. Just don't mention my name. No one needs to know that you are here.“
Maybe this was not a big surprise, but Casey felt disappointment rushing through his body. „Understood. I am just a pathetic geek, and it's not cool to hang around with me.“
Slightly upset, Zeke shook his head. „Do you think I am that low? You are one of the most brilliant guys at school, and I would love to spend much more time together with you. But I am afraid this is not a good idea.“
„What are you talking about,“ Casey asked, feeling confused.
„You are a good student; you have dreams and parents who do believe in you. I am sure you will make your way.“ Zeke poured hot water into a cup. „Green tea or chai?“
„Chai would be great, thanks.“
„Okay.“ Zeke turned back to Casey. „And now look at me. I am used to living on his own since he turned sixteen because my parents think a monthly check is all a teenager needs. The rebel, who doesn't care much about school. I am hoping to find a job at a garage or a scrapyard. That's my future.
So, what is it good for when you hang around with me? It will only ruin your rep to get seen together with me.“
Feeling lost for words, Casey could only stare at him for a long while. „What kind of bullshit is this,“ he finally blurted out.
„What do you think, what will your parents say, if they find you here? At the secret lab of the school's dealer.“
„Scat,“ Casey reminded him. „Only harmless pills.“
„Yeah.“ Zeke smirked while placing the tea in front of Casey; then, he opened the small fridge for a beer for himself. „But I'm afraid they wouldn't see it that way.“
„How can you know? You don't know them.“
„Geez, you are the most stubborn shit I've ever met. Why can't you just accept that it is better for you when we go separate ways?“
„Because I don't have many friends.“ Casey's eyes sparkled. „And, even if you like to play the king at school, I don't think that there are many people you actually care about.“
„Oh. Get it. So, you and me against the world?“ Zeke couldn't hide his wide grin any longer. „Sounds like fun.“
