Allison stared at the mask in her hands. Leathery but soft and funny. A dark blue rabbit mask with a galactic design. If she had known that wearing a mask like this was part of the lucrative promotional film, she would probably hadn't accepted the contract.
Looking at the mask brought back too many memories. A lonely childhood in the old building of the Umbrella Academy. A father who was more a drill instructor who demanded absolute obedience than a loving dad. Six siblings, all of them adopted, five of them as special as she was, with a power normal people living on earth would never be able to understand.
And Vanya, she was different, the outsider with no special ability, excluded from so many missions. Every time her father forced her (and the other five) to put on her school uniform and the small, black mask to go outside, she had envied Vanya for being so normal. She was allowed to stay back in the warmth and safety of their home, together with their android mom and Pogo, the omnipresent advanced chimpanzee butler, the only two who taught them love and faith.
Today Allison knew, that the childhood probably hadn't been easy for Vanya, too. She had never fit in, had never felt the spirit that bound all of them together back then. So often, Allison had watched her in secret and wondered why her father had adopted such a boring, normal girl.
So long ago. Her hands started to tremble. So much had happened. Number 5, he hadn't even gotten a name; a leap in time went wrong, and he vanished forever. Ben, Number 6, dead. Her father refused to talk about him, but nothing had been like before after this. Over the years, they all drifted apart; finally also she started to move on. A life on the edge; the only way she could survive. Never looking back.
„Allison?“ Her manager tore her out of her thoughts.
„Sorry, I'm almost ready,“ she answered; breathing in deeply, she lifted the blue mask to pull it over her face. She was a professional actor; she would deal with it as she dealt with all problems in her life.
„No, wait!“ His voice serious, not angry about her delay. „Something has happened. It will be best if you go home. Your dad... he had a heart attack tonight!“
