„Penelope! Baby girl.“ Derek put his arms around the woman when he noticed tears in her eyes.
„Derek,“ she sniffed at his shoulder. „You are here.“
He smiled. „You are calling, I am coming. What's the problem?“
She looked up to him, her make-up smeared, her eyes red. „Did you already hear the news?“
„You, leaving the BAU, to move to Silicon Valley? Sure, I did. J.J. was the first who called me, later Reid and Emily. They are not happy about your decision, but they do understand.“
„Am I going to make a mistake,“ Penelope asked, looking at him pleadingly. „ Tell me, is this a mistake? Sometimes it feels like it.“
„This is a question only you can answer,“ he answered, still holding her gently. „But I know your feelings. The BAU is more than just a job; the people you are working together with for years already, are not only colleges but close friends. To leave them, can feel like you are going to betray them.“
With his finger, he wiped some tears from her face. „I was struggling with the same questions when I started to think about it to leave the team. A part of me knew that it was a good decision; I was married; we were expecting a baby. But it was hard to imagine that the BAU would not stop existing without me.
Until this case; I guess it was not very different from others, but suddenly I started to realize that I put myself into danger every day anew, and I would never know if I would come back home unharmed in the evening. To Savannah and my son.“
He kept quiet for a moment, finally slowly shook his head. „The thought alone was almost unbearable. I wanted to see my son growing up, I wanted to be the father doing all the wonderful little things with him, watching a baseball game, fishing at the lake, teaching him to ride a bike or to swim. I wanted to be there for him whenever he needs me.
And when we came back to Virginia, I knew what I had to do.“
Penelope smiled weakly. „Did you ever regret it?“
„No,“ Derek answered without any hesitation. „The life after the BAU is a different one, but just as good.
Listen to your heart, and you will know if your decision is the right one.“
She sighed deeply. „I hate every kind of change.“
Derek smiled. „I know, baby girl, I know.
