„But you need to do something.“ Smith's looked pleadingly. „We can't let her die. The children at school need her.“

The young man, the doctor at the Mountain, shrugged helplessly.“This is too much for my knowledge; I don't know anymore how I could help. She has a high fever, and she is old. Maybe... old people die, it always was like that.“

It was hard to accept. Sister Hannah had survived the Big Death, while the virus had killed all adults around her. She was the reason why he was still alive; when he had lost every hope and had been ready to throw his life away, she had been the one who had given him a new perspective. He couldn't imagine a life without her.

Feeling worn out, Smith closed his eyes, let his head sink onto his chest. Full of sympathy, the doc stepped closer, putting a hand onto his shoulder. „Maybe she is strong enough to make it,“ he said. „Just sit at her side; it seems to calm her down. Try to lower the fever with cold compresses, and wet her lips with water now and then. I won't promise anything, but least it will give her some relief.“

Smith straightened up again, grabbing for the old nun's hand. Dry and warm, she was still alive. He breathed in deeply. „I know, you are angry about me because of our fight,“ he murmured, „but she never lost her faith in you. Why do you take her life, and not mine?“

He didn't expect an answer; God had finally left him alone. First, it had been such a relief but now...

„You are my messenger.“ Smith winced when the voice in his head drowned, but he didn't need long for the answer. „I will be your messenger as long as you want me. I won't complain anymore wherever you sent me, whatever you ask for. Just don't take her away. The world needs her.“
