"Smith! Why don't you join us for a while?" Erin looked down at the little guy who was cowering on his small bed. "The gathering is a complete success. I guess, after all, what has happened during the last months, it was a good idea to invite the children from the orphanage to come over."
"Thank you, Erin, but no. I don't want to ruin everything."
"You should give it a try. The children are lovely; they still can laugh and play innocently. And Sister Hannah, you should talk with her, maybe she can help you to remember that there is still hope for our world."
Smith smiled weakly. "Oh, she already does."
Erin looked surprised. "You know her?"
"Yes, I do. Rose is living with her since the day she was born."
"Rose?"
"My daughter."
"Your... "Erin blinked confused; everyone knew that Smith's words often enough were pretty cryptic, but this confession was just too hard to believe. "Your daughter? I didn't know you have one."
"I see her only rarely."
"But why? You should talk with Marcus; I'm sure he won't mind when she moves to the Moutain to be closer to you."
To her surprise, Smith shook his head. "She lives in a better place."
"For sure, "Erin agreed. "Sister Hannah does all for the children under her protection. But don't you miss her?"
"I do, "Smith answered. "All the time. But God decided differently. He sent her mother to the orphanage at the night she was in labor. She didn't survive, but he saved Rose because he knew Sister Hannah would take good care of her."
Erin kept quiet, looking for the right words. Smith never put in into question that God had chosen him to be his messenger; he followed mysterious prophecies who only existed in his mind. But this was just too hard to accept. "She might be here today. At least you could spend some time with her."
Smith shook his head. "Rather not. It's about a year that I've seen her for the last time. She had a high fever, and Sister Hannah thought that she might not make it through the night. "He hesitated shortly. "I guess it was my fault. I was so sick of it, to be a puppy in God's hands, and this morning I told him: 'No! Never again!'"
Erin put her hand onto his shaking shoulders. "You can't believe that your daughter got sick because you weren't willing to follow his wishes any longer."
Smith shrugged. "I never know his reasons. All I know is that I asked for forgiveness in that night, and the fever dropped within one hour. I won't tempt fate again. I will go wherever he will send me and stay away from Rose. The orphanage is the right place for her to grow up, and Sister Hannah will keep her safe. I can't ask for more."
