Casey stared at the letter in his hands. Good news, yes, the future he had always dreamed about was lying right ahead of him now. There was just one thing which made him feel queazy. It was about time to tell his parents.
He knew it would hard for them to accept that he had no ambitions to study for the bar; neither he planned to marry and to build a family. But exactly that was what his parents secretly wished for him, even if they always told him that it was his decision alone what he would do with his future. His dad talked so often about it, how great it would be to work together with Casey at his law office. And his mom dreamed about it to watch her grandchildren growing up. After all they had done for him, and this was a lot, it was hard to disappoint them in every way.
But when Casey finally worked up all his courage to show them the acceptance letter, his father only told him: “Well done, son.“ And his mom smiled knowingly. „We were already wondering when you finally would tell us.“
„Wait. You knew about it that I secretly did send an application letter to art school?“
„Well, it would have surprised me if you wouldn't have done it. Your love for photography is hard to overlook. And then Zeke told us that he will go to Pace University in New York next autumn. You will move together with him, won't you?“
Casey shrugged, feeling slightly embarrassed. „It's easier to share a dorm with someone you already know. And you are not disappointed? I know you always wanted me to go to College in Akron or Columbus. Maybe I would, but they don't offer many exciting art courses.“
„Casey.“ His father put an arm around his shoulder.“There is no need to apologize. Yes, I would have loved to see you as a partner of my office one day, and of course, we will miss you when you move to New York. But first of all, we are proud of you because you are grown up to a great young man who will go his way. And we don't care if you want to share your life with a girl or a guy, as long as you are happy.“
