Overwhelmed with emotions, Casey stared after the boy who tromped down the bleacher's stairs through the freshly fallen snow. What had just happened? During the last weeks, Zeke had always joined him during lunchbreak, and Casey had felt that they were almost friends. Well, at least closer than they had ever been before.

And now this. Casey couldn't think of a reason for Zeke's strong reaction. They had first chatted about school stuff and their new science teacher, who was so different from Mr. Furlong.

„As much as I can understand that he decided to go back to Massachusetts for a while, where his family lives, I miss him,“ Casey had said. „And I hope he will be back soon, maybe already in January, after winter break.“ Then, his face had brightened. „What do you think? We could find out his address; send him a little gift.“

Zeke had frowned. „Why should we?“

„Because it's Christmas soon.“

„Fuck Christmas!“

„Why do you say this? Christmas is a wonderful time. On Saturday, I will go to the mall with my mom; we want to buy some new Christmas decorations. I wonder if I can convince her that the big Santa would fit perfectly in our garden.“ Casey had giggled, full of anticipation. „Maybe we will make a stop at the bookstore; do you think an illustrated book about owls would be a fitting gift for Mr. Furlong? Remember that he told us once...“

This had been the moment when Zeke jumped up, grabbing his bag. „God, you are such a geek,“ he had hissed. „Why do you think Mr. Furlong should be interested in Christmas? He's a scientist, and Christmas is a holiday for idiots who fall for all this commerce. You want to be one of them? Fine! But leave others out of it!“ With this, he had left the bleachers and Casey behind without looking back.

It was hard to fight his tears back. Okay, probably he had only fooled himself, and Zeke was still the same prick he had been before the alien incident. Or maybe there was a different reason for his strange behavior. He had never been easy to read.

Casey grabbed his backpack, following Zeke's footsteps in the snow slowly. He would have to find out.
