„So,“ Zeke said, looking at his little son smiling. He seemed so tired already but still refused to sleep. „What do you think, maybe I could read to you for some minutes before we turn the lights off?“
Jason hesitated. „Daddy reads to me every evening,“ he said.
„I know.“ Zeke dropped down onto the bedside, grabbing for his hand. „I miss him too. But he is in New York for some days, because of his first photo exhibition. He has told you about it, remember?“
„Will he come back again?“
To his surprise, Zeke suddenly noticed tears in Jason's eyes. „Yes, of course; what makes you think so?“
„Tommy's father is moved to Columbus, and Tommy can only see him at the weekends now.“
„Oh.“ Zeke bent forward to pull the little boy into his arms. „Yes, this is sad, sometimes it can happen that a mom and a dad stop loving each other. But I am sure that they both still love Tommy, and they decided to go separate ways because it is better for all of them. Better than to fight all day long, don't you think so?“
Jason looked at him with eyes wide open. „You and daddy, you don't fight?“
„Well, we have little discussions now and then. But that's okay and for sure not a reason to depart. Pinky swear, your daddy will be back next Tuesday.“ Noticing that the little boy was still not entirely convinced, he added: “Hey, I just got an idea. We could call daddy. I guess he would love to tell you a bedtime story over the phone.“
