Johnny hit the brake hard, staring at the oversized road sign by 'Larusso's exclusive cars.' He narrowed his eyes, grabbed for a can of beer lying on the co-drivers seat. After all the years, it still hurt.
Only one moment, and all his hopes and dreams wrecked. The win had been so close, his opponent, Daniel Larusso, barely able to stand on his feet, but he had gathered all his remaining energy and stumbled back onto the mat. Today Johnny knew, it had been a fatal mistake to underestimate him.
It had happened all at once, in a blink of a second; he fell, hit the ground hard. And he knew the drowning applause was not his.
Strike hard! Strike first! No mercy! The motto of the Cobra Kai Dojo drowned in his head when he finally managed to stand up on his feet again. The stone-cold eyes of his sensei were resting on him, then an arm around his throat, choking him, a sharp voice, barely audible: „A fail is not acceptable.“
And while Daniel Larusso, the loser from school, suddenly enjoyed all the attention which belong to him, he left the dojo defeated, knowing that his lifetime dream was over.
Inwardly trembling, Johnny breathed in deeply while starting the motor of his old car again. It was not fair. Just one second. A fraction of a second, he had been too confident of victory, too unalert because it had felt so impossible that a member of the Cobra Kai Dojo would lose against a nobody, an awkward boy trained by an old man.
Even after all the years, he sometimes still couldn't believe that this had happened. But the road sign over him, showing a wide smiling Daniel Larusso, wearing a suit so expensive that he would have been able to buy beer and burger for at least a year from it, told the truth.
