Title: Always remember
Characters: Erin Kaufman, Michelle
Prompt: beauty of life
Words: 368

:::

Erin entered the storage room in the back of the Mountain and stopped, surprised. „Woah,“ she murmured. „You turned this room into a museum.“

Michelle placed some old books on a shelf and turned around, smiling. „It's nothing big, but I do my best. The world needs places like this to remember the beauty of old life.“

Erin looked around, taking in the painting on the grey walls, the table with glass figurines, and the shelves full of books and various trophies. A colorful bunch of flowers in a small porcelain vase. Memories of long-gone times.

An old, tarnished mirror with a golden frame. A desk with a fitting chair, in a surprisingly good state. Erin wondered where Michelle might have found these; most wooden furniture was long gone, having either burned in a fire or been used as building material. When the world around you broke down, it was only about surviving.

Erin stepped closer to the wall to have a look at some photos and framed magazine covers. Her heart stopped beating, and her fingers trembled when she carefully touched one of them. Tears were burning in her eyes. Memories flashed through her mind; memories she thought she had long forgotten.

Michelle watched her in silence until the young woman finally stepped away from the photos. „Kurdy found a box with old magazines in the attic of an abandoned library, “ she said. „Sadly, only some covers were still in a good state. Do you remember this one?“

Erin nodded slowly, wiping her tears away. „Tiger Beat's TeenView, with a poster of Shaun Cassidy. My sister was a big fan of Shaun, and she spent all her pocket money to buy the magazine. But we fought this day, and I tore the poster of him into small pieces. At the end, we both got house arrest over the weekend.“ She smiled sadly. „Innocent teenager problems. And we had no idea that our world would break down only some months later.“

Michelle put her hand on Erin's arm. „Never forget this,“ she said gently. „Memories can hurt, but they are all that is left from the old times. It's important for the future to keep them alive.“

Title: The Sound of Silence
Characters: Mr. Smith
Prompt: sound of silence
Words: 147

:::

Frowning, Smith opened his eyes. Not a nightmare had woken him from sleep today, but something was different. The rain had finally stopped, and a fresh smell of grass and wet soil filled the air. The sun just started to rise from behind the clouds, promising a beautiful day.

Smith sat up. It was not that. He listened hard. Nothing! Silence!

Since he woke up on the shore of the lake months ago, the booming voice had been in his head. He had tried to ignore it at first, but no one could escape God's voice. It was omnipresent, every hour, every minute. Every day and every night.

And now – silence. Smith relaxed and smiled. He wasn't sure if this was a good or a bad omen. But for the moment, he didn't care. He would enjoy the sound of silence as long as it lasted.

Title: When The Rain Brings The Silence
Characters: Mister Smith
Prompt: rainy day / 7 days, 7 stories
Words: 122

:::

Smith closed his eyes, turning his face towards the rain falling from the sky. No one else was around; everyone seemed to hide inside the Mountain from the stormy weather.

He enjoyed moments like this: the silence, with only some birds chirping in the trees, the wind blowing through the leaves, and raindrops falling in tiny puddles. Alone. Even God's voice in his head kept quiet.

The rain increased even more, and not even his old coat would protect him for long. Soon enough, he would be wet to the bones. He continued to stand motionless. It had been a long time since he had felt so free and peaceful, and he wanted to savor the feeling for as long as possible.

Title: Sign of Trouble
Characters: Mister Smith, Kurdy Malloy
Prompt: any / any / first sign of trouble
Words: 479

:::

Kurdy frowned. „What's this supposed to mean? You don't have a past?“

The little guy beside him shrugged. „Well, I guess I have one, but I can't remember. One morning I did wake up and all my memories were gone.“

„That's kinda strange.“

„A lot in my life is strange. Like the voice in my head who insists that it's God talking with me because I am his messenger.“

Kurdy hit the brakes, and the old jeep came to a halt. Suddenly, he regretted that he had stepped in when he had seen the guy getting knocked around by a group of drunkards in the bar. Obviously, Jeremiah was right when he sometimes called him a softie; he could never turn his eyes away when someone got hassled. „One day, it will bring you serious trouble,“ his friend had warned him. „And I won't be around to help you out of it!“

Kurdy huffed inwardly; maybe the day was today. „So, who are you? A kind of priest,“ he asked cautiously.

„No. I am just...“ The guy shrugged. „One name is as good as the other. Call me Smith. Mister Smith.“

„Okay, Smith. I guess, our paths will sepa....“ A booming detonation made him stop. Shit, this had been close. On the road, only a mile down, near the bridge. Maybe the skinheads were already nearer to the Mountain than Markus knew. Kurdy felt iciness rushing through his body. So many people, good men and women, and children. They were all in danger if he didn't return in time to warn them. With a shaking hand, Kurdy turned the key in the ignition.

„That's not a good idea.“

The voice made him stop; reminded him that he was not alone. „What do you know,“ he asked, his voice sharp, his eyes narrowed.

„Going back now will lead them to the Mountain. Will bring chaos and death over to everyone living there. We will have to wait until the fog comes to hide us.“

This was too much. Kurdy grabbed the collar of the old coat, pulling Smith closer. „You will tell me all now,“ he hissed. „Who are you? Where do you know all this from? You are a spy of the skinheads?“

„Like I said, I am God's messenger. He told me to find you.“ A weak smile turned up on Smith's face when Kurdy deepened his grip. „Go ahead, I am used to it, that people hit the shit of me when I try to help them. But maybe you should think twice first.

Without me, you would have been in the middle of the bridge when the bomb exploded, and you would be dead now, or at least seriously hurt and a captive of the skinheads. No chance to go back to the Mountain in time to warn them.“

Title: A Sanctuary in a Frigid World
Character: Jeremiah, Libby
Prompt: Yahtzee / frigid
Words: 500

:::

Jeremiah dropped down beside the young woman, who was cowering under the metal stairs, her face covered with her hands. „Why are you hiding here? The cafeteria is a much more comfortable place to hang around.“

„Too many people, I prefer to be alone.“

„Do you mind me joining you for a while? We can just sit here in silence.“

She lifted her head. „You are a nice guy, Jeremiah, but you don't know anything about me. Why do you care?“

„Your name is Liberty, but you prefer to be called Libby. You like music, you like to dance. You should smile more because you are beautiful when you do so. That's all I need to know for the moment.“

She kept quiet for a while, staring at the floor. When she turned back to him, tears were sparkling in her eyes. „I am sorry, I am not ready for this yet. I have learned on the hard way, only to trust myself.“

„We all had to go through a lot of shit before we finally ended up here. The Mountain is like a sanctuary in the frigid world. From now on, you are safe. A comfortable bed, enough to eat, and friends when you are willing to let others into your life. You don't have to fight alone any longer.“

Libby stared at him with empty eyes. „Simms always warned us that lies are used to hide behind wonderful words,“ she finally said.

„Simms?“

„The leader of the group I was living with for the last five years.“ She hesitated. "I don't know how to move on now without his support."

Jeremiah narrowed his eyes. „He was the one who beat you up and left you alone in the middle of the nowhere?“

She shrugged. „He does what needs to be done. You follow his rules, and everything is fine.“

„But he has no right to treat you, or anyone else, like that.“ Jeremiah's voice got louder, and Libby winced visibly. He cursed inwardly. „Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. But this makes me angry. How can he dare it? Who is he?“

„He is not a bad guy,“ she answered in a low voice. „Just a very rational one. It's all about surviving the next day. I didn't follow the rules; I had to pay the price. It's always like that, isn't it?“

Jeremiah shook his head. „No, it's not. Not here, in the Mountain. For Markus, every single life counts. You don't have to be a tyrant to build a future.“ He put his hand on her arm and was almost surprised that she didn't shriek back. Maybe this was a good sign. „Give me a chance, will you? Give me a chance to show you that life can still be beautiful, even in a frigid world like ours.“

A faint smile turned up on her lips when she nodded hesitantly. "Okay," she whispered, "I trust you, Jeremiah!"

Title: Into Your Arms
Character: Jeremiah, Kurdy Malloy
Prompt: Our Song / Fandom Rush
Words: 512

:::

Jeremiah rushed out of the cafeteria, leaving behind two knocked-over tables, some broken chairs, and a guy with a bloody nose. Erin stared after him, shocked. „What was this? I haven't seen him in such a state for weeks.“

Kurdy got up from his chair, shrugging. „I'm afraid he is still struggling with his guilt. Maybe a party for his birthday was not the best idea.“

„No one blames him! And I thought it would be good for everone; distract us from Libby and everything that happened. It's hard for all of us but for him... Maybe I should have known that he is not ready yet.“

Kurdy put an arm around the young woman's shoulder, squeezing it slightly. „Nothing of this was your fault. Can you handle this mess alone for a while? Then I would like to go, look after him.“

Erin nodded quickly. „No prob; it could be worse.“

„Okay!“ Kurdy nodded shortly, then turned to the cafeteria door to follow his friend. He didn't have to look for long; as expected, Jeremiah was sitting under the stairs at the end of the hall. Libby's famous place at the Mountain was now his refuge when everything got too much. His head rested against the wall, his eyes closed.

When he heard Kurdy's footsteps coming closer, he turned his head, his face still pale, a deep sadness in his eyes. „I know, I am a fucking shit“, he whispered, „I ruined the evening for everyone.“

„They will get over it.“ Kurdy smirked, dropping down on the floor beside his friend. „You okay? Your hand is swollen.“

Jeremiah shrugged. „I guess I should go, apologize to Erin for overreacting like this.“ But he didn't make the try to stand up. „She only meant well. She is always thinking of others first. And I thought, why not play along for an hour or two, smile, and pretend to be surprised and happy? And then she will stop bothering me.“

He clenched his fists, winced slightly when the pain rushed through his arm. „Maybe it would have worked. A beer and one or two whiskey, and I started to relax. But then...“ He breathed in deeply, opened his hands, only to clench them again. „There was this song. Into my arms … I didn't even know the singer. It's an old song from the time before the Big Death.“

Kurdy waited in silence for him to continue. „It was Libby's song. When I first met her, it was playing on her old cassette recorder; she had closed her eyes, threw her head back, and danced to the distorted music. From that moment, I knew she was the only one for me.

Later, when I told her about it, she laughed, in a way only she could laugh, and she said, „I guess I will share the song with you. Make it our song. Because whatever happens, I will keep returning, always and evermore, into your arms.“

Feeling exhausted, Jeremiah closed his eyes. „I did believe her. How could I not!“

„What's that,“ Rose asked and pointed at the big, glaring orange fruit in the middle of the table.

Michelle smiled. „A pumpkin. It's almost Halloween; I thought it might be fun if we would make a Jack O'Lantern.“

Curious, Rose bent forward when the young woman grabbed the knife and carefully started to cut out the stipe.

„Now it's your turn,“ Michelle said, holding the spoon out to the little girl. „You can hollow out the pumpkin. We will use the pulp for soup later; that's delicious. But the most fun is to crave the face.“

„A face,“ Rose asked, and her eyes sparkled.

„Yeah. A spooky face. Later, we can put a candle in the pumpkin, and the light shining through the eyes and the mouth will cast out ghosts.“

„What kind of ghosts?“

„Every kind of spooky creatures you can imagine in your fantasy.“

Rose smiled and clapped her hands. „That's cool.“

„Yes, it is,“ Michelle agreed. She watched Rose working at the pumpkin lantern, entirely concentrated, strands of her long brown hair falling into her face; now and then, she wet her lips with her tongue.

As she had done ages ago, she had been sitting at the old wooden table in their grandmother's kitchen. A fire was burning in the oven, and her grandma made hot cacao and told her stories. Old stories of long forgotten times. Back then, she thought it would always be like that.

But the Big Death had changed everything. Her grandmother died during the first days of the outbreak. Her parents about two weeks later. Like all adults. Only the children did survive. Fifteen years were gone already. First, she had tried not to think about the past too often. Then, she realized that it was her mission to keep it alive.

Even if the memories sometimes hurt, it was important that the past didn't vanish into the void. Otherwise, children like Rose would never learn about it.

„Michelle? Did I do it right?"

She looked up and smiled about the more funny than spooky face Rose had craved into the pumpkin. "It's perfect, “she reassured her.

Rose beamed at her. „Will you tell me a story?“

„Yeah, sure. What do you think about the story of Jack O'Lantern?“

Words: 225
Finished: October 2017

Kurdy's eyes rested on the little guy thoughtfully. Smith was his name, he had told him, but Kurdy wasn't sure if this was true. His worn-out coat, the way he clutched his backpack. The remnants of a life. It couldn't be easy for him in the new world, a world without rules; only the strongest and most ruthless could survive alone on the roads. He looked too small, his voice was too gentle, and the things he had told Kurdy were much too creepy.

But he had saved his life today!

Kurdy knew Markus didn't like strangers in the Mountain, but at least for one night, he wanted to offer some peace. A place to warm up, a comfortable bed, and a good meal.

„So, where do you want to start,“ he asked, pointing at the long buffet table in the cafeteria. Smith still stood rooted to the ground. Kurdy could understand what was going on inside him. He remembered all too well the first time he entered the cafeteria of the Mountain. The sight of all the treats, the smell of hearty meals and fresh coffee. Like a wonderland.

„The stew is delicious. And you should try the roast chicken.“ Kurdy chuckled. „Best to try both.“

„Apple pie.“ Smith whispered, smacking his lips. "I will try the apple pie. With cream.“

Title: The End of the World
Character: Mr. Smith, Erin Kaufman
Words: 181
Prompt: any, any, on the day the world ends, that night the stars shine brighter then ever

"What are you doing here, Erin?" Slightly worried, Smith stepped closer. "It's a cold night."

The young woman turned around. "I was looking for some time alone. It's so peaceful out here. The stars, the moon. Can you imagine a more beautiful place?" She sighed. "I just wonder how long the peace will still last. Most people living in the Mountain are unaware of the danger they are in. Markus is doing his best to keep them safe, but he thinks a war with the skinheads is inevitable. This can be the end of everything good he has been fighting for for fifteen years."

Smith kept quiet, listening to a voice only he could hear. When he turned back to Erin, he smiled. "God says: On the day the world ends, that night the stars shine brighter then ever."

She blinked, slightly confused, and looked up to the sky. The stars were gone, hidden behind thick clouds. And she relaxed. Maybe there still was time. The world wouldn't end today, and tomorrow, Markus might find a way to avoid the downfall.

The candle on the table was almost burned down, but Kurdy couldn't take his eyes away from the woman beside him. Elizabeth, pretty, smart, funny. For him, it had been love at first sight, but he had never dared to hope that she would feel the same way.

When she kissed him for the first time some weeks ago, his heart almost stopped beating. But she had laughed, and her brown eyes had sparkled mischievously. „You are afraid of a tiny, fragile woman, Kurdy Malloy,“ she had teased, pulling him down on her bed.

She wasn't fragile or tiny but the strongest, bravest woman he had ever met, and he was almost afraid to touch her. Because he knew that, afterward, he would never be able to let her go again.

She opened her eyes and smiled. „Why don't you come back to bed; we still have some hours before I will have to go.“

He slipped under the blanket and felt her warmth while pulling her into his arms. Inwardly, he was shaking. Some more hours, and he would have to let her go without knowing if he would ever see her again. A thought that tormented him all the time when she was not around. Falling in love in a world like this was not the best idea. But how could he not?

Title: Missed
Character: Kurdy Malloy, Erin Kaufman, Rose Smith, Mr. Smith
Words: 375
Prompt: bananas (bingo prompt) / Fandom Rush

:::

Kurdy watched the little girl, who was entirely concentrated on her puzzle, inwardly sighing. It was only a matter of time before she would start wondering about her dad's absence. And he was unsure how to explain to her, that he was missed. Since last night already.

It was not that rare that Smith did his own thing, no matter what Marcus, Lee, or Kurdy asked him to do. But it had never happened before that he didn't return when he knew Rose would visit him. The little girl was living at an old convent—a school and a children's home today—a much better place for her than a former military laboratory built in a Mountain.

When footsteps came closer, Rose looked up expectantly. „Daddy?“

„It's me, honey.“ Erin smiled wide, but Kurdy noticed her shaking her head indiscernibly. „Look what I have here. Michelle was planting some seed last year, and now it is growing in our greenhouse.“

Rose's eyes widened. „What's that,“ she asked.

„It's a fruit. A banana.“

„I can eat it?“

„Oh, yes, and it's delicious. Sweet. Wanna try?“

Eagerly, the girl nodded, watching Erin peel the long, yellow fruit. Then she reached a piece over. Rose grabbed it, smelled it, and chuckled delightedly before taking a first mini bite. She held it in her mouth for a moment before swallowing and licking her lips. „Good!“

Erin laughed. „Do you want more?“

Rose hesitated. „Maybe a little bit. The rest I will save for my dad!“

Kurdy bit his upper lip; it had been only a tiny delay. „Rose,“ he started when suddenly the door to the Mountain's cafeteria flew open, and a little guy stepped in. He placed his heavy backpack on the floor and hurried over to them.

„Daddy,“ Rose cheered, throwing herself into his arms. Kurdy noticed Smith slightly swaying while he caught her, and there was a small cut on his cheek; his coat was dirty and torn at the arm. Obviously, something had happened, but this would have to wait until later. Smith was back; he wouldn't have to tell Rose that she had lost her beloved father.

"Daddy, Erin has a banana," she told him, "have you ever eaten one before?"

Words: 365
Prompt: sick (bingo prompt) / Fandom Rush

„Smith, how are you doing?“ Kurdy stepped behind the curtain of the hospital's ward, watching the guy in the bed before him worried. It was strange to see him in a hospital gown instead of the old, thick coat he usually wore all the time. „Erin told me that you suddenly broke down last night with a high fever.“

The little guy looked pale but forced a weak smile on his lips. „Being sick is not the worst that can happen to you. You get a comfy bed and a warm meal for free.“ He coughed violently, gasping for air. „That's a lot when you are living on the roads.“

Kurdy frowned. „What did the doctor say? Where does the fever come from?“

„He doesn't know,“ Smith shrugged. "But there's no need to worry; it's not the virus.“

„Where do you know this from?" Kurdy couldn't stop thinking about this guy working at the lab he had talked with lately; he had warned him that it was not impossible that the virus might mutate and come back one day. Maybe it was here already.

„God says, I have a job to do.“ Exhausted, Smith closed his eyes. „He won't let me die because he still needs me.“

„Okay, you are talking in a fever delusion now,“ Kurdy huffed, wondering what he was actually doing here. Smith was a stranger to him, not a friend, not a partner, even if the little guy insisted he was. Stubborn, weird shit, that's what he was. „I am going to get the nurse.“

„Wait!“ The voice almost inaudible now, Smith held him back. „Do me a favor!“

Kurdy stopped. „What,“ he asked, barely able to hide his impatience.

„My backpack, take good care of it, will you? Don't let anyone touch it!“

„Hm. Okay, I guess I can do that.“

„Thanks. You are... true... frien...“ For a split of a second, Kurdy was sure that this was the end, but then he noticed Smith's chest rising and falling, barely visible, but he was still alive. Feeling relieved, Kurdy grabbed the heavy backpack beside the bed and left the hospital's ward.

Title: Running empty
Character: Kurdy Malloy, Mister Smith
Words: 234
Prompt: empty

:::

When Kurdy opened the van door for the umpteenth time, allowing the storm and the rain to come in, Smith finally opened his eyes. „Why don't you stop doing this; the storm will last as long as it will last.“

„I don't get how you can think about sleeping,“ the big guy huffed, wiping his forehand with a cloth. „This storm is unnatural; already ragging for two days. And we are stranded here, in the middle of nowhere, with the radio connection disrupted. Our reserves are running empty; the water is used up, and the batteries of the flashlight, too. I don't know if the van is still roadworthy, not to mention the condition of the roads. And the way back to the Mountain is long; we won't be back in time.“

Kurdy paused, gasping for air. He knew he needed to fight his rising anger quickly because it was not helpful. He just wished Jeremiah would be here instead of this strange little guy with his even more strange prophecies. Jeremiah was so down to earth; they had already been through many dangerous situations together. They knew each other; they could count on each other.

„God says we will be back home soon.“

Inwardly cursing, Kurdy rolled his eyes. „Smith, shut up! Go back to sleep!“

Jeremiah (TV) - written for Comment Fic and FFFC

Seven Mini Fills

Prompt: 3 sentences - Any, any, losing your memory
Smith watched Kurdy sitting at the fire, a book in his hands but obviously not reading; it was his mother's birthday today; a mother he had loved and lost all too early; during the first days of the Big Days, his father had shot her, not of hate but out of love, because he hadn't been able to endure her suffering any longer.

Sometimes, it was a relief not to be able to remember anything of his past, Smith thought, not his name, not his family, not the good moments that probably had happened in his life before the Big Death plunged the world into chaos, killing all adults, leaving the children behind alone.

All children but him; God had chosen him as his messenger and was his constant companion from then on; but today, God kept quiet, not willing to offer at least some comfort to Kurdy or the rest of the world.

Prompt: strawberries
Smith watched them intently; it was about time his little daughter became familiar with Kurdy, the guy he called his best friend. It was not a big surprise, though, that Rose acted a bit shy; Kurdy was strong, tall, and intimidating, and she looked so small and helpless … even if Smith knew that these first impressions were so wrong.

Kurdy crouched down in front of her and opened his hand; Smith could see the red, ripe fruits in it and he heard his soft voice:” These are strawberries, take one, they are delicious.”

Prompt: paper flower
It didn't often happen that Kurdy felt at a loss for words, but for sure, he was not prepared for this: a little girl with long, brown hair, a shy smile on her lips, some paper flowers in her tiny hands; her words still echoed in his head: 'This is for you. For saving my dad's life' and suddenly he recognized the green-brown eyes and knew it: She was Smith's daughter!

Prompt: 3 sentence fic - ghosts
Kurdy stared at the dark, foggy wall in front of them and huffed, slightly annoyed; he should have known it: a mission together with Smith would never go like expected. All he wanted was to bring this job to an end as quickly as possible and go back to Mountain.

"Don't tell me that you are afraid of ghosts!"

"Whatever is waiting for us in this forest, it's much more horrible than every ghost you can imagine," Smith answered, visibly shuddering.

Prompt: last name
Smith; it was his last name, his first name, his only name, as good as any other. Because he had lost every memory of his past. Because he was God's messenger, and God didn't ask about his name.

Prompt: this is war
Erin watched the long convoy, loaded with men and weapons, leaving the Mountain and sighed. „So, this is war,“ she asked.

Smith thought about God's last message and shook his head. „No, this is just a tiny intermezzo.“

Prompt: (fuck) destiny
"I can't," Smith said. "It's my destiny."

"Fuck destiny," Kurdy growled. "Fuck God. What has he done for us so far, tell me!"

"He did save me. And I'm the one who will save the world."

Sighing, Kurdy gave in.

„It's over two months now, Jeremiah; Libby's betrayal was not a shock only for you,“ Kurdy said, looking down at the young man, who was lying on his bed, with messy hair, dirty clothes, as if he hadn't changed them for ages, „but if not everything Markus has done for a better future should be in vain, we need to look forward now“, and he was almost surprised when Jeremiah opened his eyes, the hate was gone, only a deep sadness was lying in them.

„My brother died about fifteen years ago; he got shot because I wasn't there to save him, and I thought I wouldn't endure it; I felt so helpless, angry, and lost, and I promised myself that if I would survive, I never would love someone so much I loved him; I would live on my own because this world is not a place anymore for love and friendship and every hope is gone; but then I met you, and I guess you are my friend and Markus; he might be a dreamer, but he can give people hope.“

Jeremiah smiled sadly while he continued: “And then I met Libby, and I left every caution behind; I loved her with all my heart, though I should have known better; she was my life, my future, and I don't care, that she tried to betray me, that she tried to betray everyone in the Mountain because now she is dead, she got shot, and I can't stop thinking, that I wasn't there to save her.“

Some Mini Fills - The Faculty - written for Three Sentence Ficathon 2025

Eight Mini Fills

Prompt: I love you now as I loved you then

Casey stared at Zeke with his blue eyes sparkling: “You haven't changed in the slightest,“ he huffed, „still the same, uncaring prick.“ Then he was gone, vanished into the night, leaving him alone again, like back then, when he had left Herrington behind to go to college.

Zeke stared after him, feeling tears pricking in his eyes, whispering:“ It is better this way; I love you now, as I loved you then, and I will still love you tomorrow, but you will never know because you deserve someone better than me.“

:::

Prompt: broken bones

While Mrs. Connor rushed over to the hospital's bed, where Casey was lying with a bandage around his left foot, Mr. Conner stared at the boy standing beside it with narrowed eyes. “What are you doing here; if you have anything to do with what, I will report that to the police,“ he spat. „It's about time that someone stops you.“

Zeke kept quiet, but Casey protested:“ Dad, no, he did nothing at all; it was in the park; I got distracted while taking photos and tripped over a stone. Broke my stupid toe, nothing serious, it doesn't even hurt much, but Zeke insisted on taking me to the hospital. So, you should better thank him!“

„Oh, we do,“ Mrs. Connor said, pulling the surprised boy into her arms, „I've always known you are a good boy, and from now on, you are welcome in our house at any time!“

:::

Prompt: "I've never believed in fate, but that doesn't actually stop it from fucking you over."

„An alien queen, taking over your highschool,“ the boy asked, looking at him with a mixture of disbelief and amusement,“ really, you'll have to think of something better to impress me.“

„I've stopped trying to impress others to get what I want ages ago,“ Zeke smirked. „The day my world was turned around. I always was a realistic guy who believed in science, not in fate. That day, I realized that don't believe in it won't stop it from fucking you over. What will be, will be, and you can only live with it.“

:::

Prompt: any, any, no one is unlovable

"This is not a good idea; I am the lonely wolf who prefers one-night stands without any expectations and promises. You are a hopeless dreamer, and I don't want to hurt you."

Casey hesitated briefly before pulling Zeke back into his arms, murmuring:" I am willing to risk this; also a lonely wolf is lovable in his way."

:::

Prompt: Any, any, My pirate days are over

Meat stared at him, frowning:" What's this supposed to be; you don't sell Scat and pron vids anymore?"

"Business is closed," Zeke smirked, "my pirate days are over!"

He had to admit that maybe he was even more surprised about his words than Meat was, but when he wanted a future in New York, together with Casey, it was about time to leave his old life behind.

:::

Prompt: any, any, adopting a supernatural pet

It didn't happen often that Zeke doubted his sanity, but this was impossible, only a ridiculous dream, or had he just seen the cat disappear through the wall?

Casey laughed out loud, „That's so cool, isn't it,“ he asked, knocking at the wall twice and the black-white cat with her piercing green eyes showed up again, creeping purring around his legs, „you have a cat with superpower now.“

„No, I don't,“ Zeke protested, „she won't stay here in my garage; that's just too creepy,“ but Casey grinned while the cat jumped onto the old, comfy couch, curling up like a ball and closing her eyes, „Seems as if she has a different opinion, and it might be difficult to lock her out because she can walk through the walls.“

:::

Prompt: any, any ship, "I never said I hate you"

Casey looked at Zeke with a sad smile on his face, „Don't be silly, I never said I hate you.“

„You don't,“ Zeke huffed, „well, that's kinda stupid; after all I did to you, you should better do; I guess everyone would agree with that.“

„I am not interested in other people's thoughts; I am interested in you; even after all you did, I can't believe that you wanted to hurt me; it's more that you are scared of too much nearness and feelings, and when you are afraid, you freak out.“

Zeke stared at him with narrowed eyes, „Who do you think you are, the shrink my mom forced me to see when I was about fourteen? I can tell you, it got even worse after that, so better stop talking shit and run!“

Casey watched him silently for a while before shaking his head, „No, you won't get rid of me so easily; I love you, and I know you are worth fighting for.“

:::

Prompt: any, any, what I want can't be bought

„So, what are you gonna do after graduation,“ Casey asked, „buying this old garage, starting your own business?“

Zeke kept quiet, thinking about his answer; yes, this was the plan, but what he really wanted couldn't be bought with all the money in the world. He wanted to stop time, hold on to the moments together with Casey, the best moments of his life; he wanted to ask him to stay here, in Herrington, but this would be too selfish. So he finally smirked: “It's not the worst job.“

Casey pulled his face. „Maybe not; it's just a waste of talent for someone as smart as you. I wish you would change your mind about college; maybe you could even visit the city college in Boston, and we could even share a dorm.“

Zeke winced at Casey's ear-piercing cry and slammed on the brakes, expecting the worst. In times like these, it was better always to be on guard.

Without any explanation Casey opened the passengers door and jumped out of the Chevrolet, only a moment later he vanished between big trees and thick undergrowth. Zeke felt anger rising up while he followed him slowly, the gun in his hand, just to be sure. This time, he wondered what it would be: a half-starved animal, some guy in trouble, or just a rare flower this stupid boy wanted to examine more closely. There were a lot of reasons for Casey to leave every wariness behind. Though he actually should know better, especially after the trouble they had gotten into only a few days ago.

Zeke jerked around when a dark figure suddenly dropped from one of the trees behind him. The well-known laughter made him curse loudly. "Holy shit, Casey. What the hell are you thinking? What's happened?"

The boy grinned wide, but Zeke wasn't sure if he wanted to shake him or hug him. "Cherries."

"What?"

"Cherries," repeated Casey and opened his hand.

Feeling dumbfounded, Zeke stared at the red fruits. Cherries? What was the reason for this drama?

"I remember," Casey said, unimpressed, and put one of the fruits into their mouth. "My grammy had a small farm with fruit trees in the backyard. Apples, pears. And cherries. Whenever I visited her, I climbed around in the trees, and I could eat as much as I wanted. I loved the cherries. My mom wasn't very amused because I always returned with stains on my shirt or tattered pants. But my grandma didn't care. She used to say: A real boy should pick his cherries right from the tree and not buy them at the supermarket."

He smiled softly, lost in memories, while looking down at the red fruits in his hand. "These days on her farm are one of my favorite childhood memories.

Want some? They are sweet and juicy."

Inwardly sighing, Zeke grabbed a cherry. How could he be mad at him for longer?
