Title: The Baseball Glove
Character: Casey Connor, Zeke Tyler
Word Count: 420
Prompt: I don't believe in Santa Clause
Rating: PG13

:::

„What are you doing,“ Zeke asked, while Casey quickly turned the piece of paper around that was lying on the table before him. „Writing a letter to Santa Clause?“

To his surprise, Casey blushed. „Don't be stupid!“

Zeke grinned. „Oh. I get it; you do! Cute!“

„Geez! I am not a toddler who still believes in Santa Claus. It's just...“ Casey paused, shrugging. „My mom loves this kind of stuff. She is so in tradition and Christmas and all, and after having such a hard year, with my grandpa dying and my dad losing his job, she should get at least a perfect Christmas. If this means that I am writing a letter to Santa again, I will do it.“

There was a long silence until Zeke suddenly said: „Your parents can be proud of you; you are a good son.“

„Huh?“ Casey watched the older boy suspiciously, but Zeke smiled at him, though his eyes looked sad.

„Must be great to grow up in a family like this. Where everyone cares for the other, I have never written a letter to Santa Claus, not even as a child. I spent Christmas evening alone at home with a nanny who always made me feel like I was just a well-paid job for her, while my parents went to exclusive parties all night long. The Christmas tree in our house was more of an art object, and I wasn't allowed to get near it anymore after I once crashed one of the expensive deco ornaments. The gifts I received were selected and perfectly wrapped by a gift service. No one cared about it that I was just a little boy whose biggest wish was a baseball glove and a scarf of his famous team.“

Casey listened in silence. „This is so sad,“ he finally murmured, unsure what else to say. Zeke was the cool boy from school who always seemed to have his life under control. But obviously, he had secrets that told a different story.

Zeke smirked. „No need to get pathetic,“ he snarled, the sadness in his eyes gone. „I did survive. And when I think about it, it's not the worst to be alone around Christmas. At least I don't have to pretend that I still believe in Santa Claus.“

He turned around, stomping down the bleacher's stairs without looking back. Casey bit his lower lip; he couldn't stop wondering if there was a way to find out more about Zeke's favorite baseball team.

„Hey, what's wrong?“ Stokely gave Casey a friendly nudge. „Where is the Christmas mood gone? You look like the Grinch today.“

„Zeke!“ He sighed. „It's complicated.“

„Okay. Spit it! Problems with the boyfriend?“

„No, actually not. Everything is perfect; he even agreed to spend Christmas Eve at my home. And you know, this is a big step for him.“

Stokely chuckled.- „Boy is in love. I admit that I wouldn't have thought this possible some months ago. You sure you are not a secret magician?“

„I wish I would be. Then, finding a decent gift for him would be so easy. But all I can think about is much too expensive.“

„But he knows that you are saving up every cent for college; he won't expect you to buy him a golden ring.“

Casey pulled his face. „That's not funny, Stokes. I always have homemade gifts for my parents and Mrs. Miller, the lady who lives next to our house. This is nice; no one expects anything different. But I can't get Zeke a stupid bookmark or a cookbook written by myself. That's just too embarrassing.“

„Why?“

„Why? Because, since he was a child, he always gets the most expensive shit from his parents. Look around in the house. Blankets by Dolce Gabbani, the newest stereo system, a barista espresso machine. The new GTO! Whatever he wants, he will get it.“

„I don't think all of this ever meant anything to him. Well, the GTO, though he will never love it as much as he did love the old one. The rest of it...“ Stokely shrugged. „He knows much too well that all this stuff is only a flimsy excuse of his fucking parents for never being around.“

„Hm!“

Stokely smiled. „What you give him, what your parents give him, is so much more than he has ever gotten from them. And I am sure he is smart enough to realize that. At least, I hope so.“

„Hm,“ Casey repeated, answering her smile with a wide grin. „You are a genius, Stokes. The GTO. Zeke's baby.

You know, back then, at lunchbreak, when everything got out of control again, I sometimes sneaked to the school's parking lot to take some photos. Zeke's GTO... well, it was the most incredible car there.“ He shrugged. „Probably, he would have killed me if he had caught me redhanded, but it felt so daring.“ His blue eyes sparkled with excitement. „And now I have tons of photos to put together the best photo collage ever.“

„That's it,“ Stokely agreed. „He will love this.“

Prompt: train

Grinning wide, Casey finally put his camera down. „This is the best Christmas gift ever,“ he said. „The landscape along this route is breathtaking."

„So, you like it?" Zeke smiled back at him, feeling almost high. He hadn't hoped for it that his idea of surprising Casey with a trip on the Adirondack Train would be such a hit. It had been more a last-minute plan because the boy refused to accept any gift from him, though it was Christmas. Their first Christmas together. „And the tour isn't over yet. We will hop off the Adirondack train in the Hudson Valley for a winter hike, then warm up at the Brotherhood. It's a local award-winning winery.“

„Wine,“ Casey repeated, surprised. „I thought you were more of the beer guy.“

„I am.“ Zeke laughed. „Though, I am willing to make an exception for a glass of their New York Red.

But we are not going there alone for the wine. I can't imagine a better setting for a photo geek like you. Just wait and see.“

Casey's eyes sparkled full of excitement, and maybe for the first time in his life, Zeke felt thankful for his parents, who had taken him here almost every year around Christmas when he had still been a child. The most boring place in the world, like he had thought back then. But now, when he was discovering the world anew through Casey's eyes, he had to admit how wrong he had been.

Title: Early Onset of Winter
Character: Mr. Smith, Sister Hannah
Word Count: 300
Prompt: early winter/warmth
Rating: PG13

:::

Smith pulled the old coat closer around his shoulders. Winter was early this year, bringing snow and frosty nights. He usually didn't mind being on the roads; he wasn't looking for company. The voice in his head was hard enough to endure.

But right now, he would have given a lot for a shelter, a fireplace, and a meal to warm him up. Wishful thinking; the urban hinterland he had been walking across for two days already was desolate and deserted. Even God kept quiet. Maybe he had finally realized that it had been a ridiculous idea to make him, Smith, his messenger. And he had decided, to leave him alone, here, in the middle of the nowhere.

Breathing hard, Smith stopped. Dropped the heavy backpack into the snow. Squeezed his eyes shut. Too tired to move on. If this was the end, he felt ready for it.

:::

First, he felt the comfortable warmth of a thick blanket around his body. Then, the hearty odore of a delicious stew reached his mind. He was dreaming! Or dead?! Was heaven like that? A place where all his wishes came true.

„Welcome back,“ a voice reached his ear. A foreign voice, not his.

Reluctantly, he opened his eyes, almost afraid to wake up. And there she was. Her dress taddered; a woolen scarf covering her hair. Friendly brown eyes, lots of wrinkles on her face. Too old to be still alive.

„What...“ he started in a croaking voice. Much too old! „What...“

„Everything is fine.“ The woman stepped closer, put a hand on his arm. So gentle, so warm, so comforting. Like the hand of a mother, he couldn't remember. Smiling, he closed his eyes again. Yes, now everything was okay. He had finally found a safe haven.

Shocked, Zeke stared at the green costume in Casey's hands. „What the hell is this?“

„Your elf costume. Remember, you have promised to help out at the Christmas party at the children's home this weekend.“

„You should have warned me that this means to make a clown out of me. No way I am wearing this horridness.“

Casey couldn't help but giggle. „Oh, c'mon, it's not that bad. Bushy Evergreen has always been my favorite elf; he was the inventor of Santa's magic toy-making machine. I think this fits you.“

„Bushy...Oh God.“ Zeke rolled his eyes. „Can it get even worse?“

„Don't worry. You will look so cute with the jelly bag cap when helping Santa to hand out the gifts.“ Now Casey grinned wide. „The children will have so much fun. And my mom will love you forever for saving the Christmas party.“

Zeke breathed in deeply. „Shit,“ he muttered while finally grabbing the costume. This was for sure the most embarrassing thing he had ever done, but when it was the only way into Mrs. Connor's heart, he was willing to endure it.

Kurdy looked up from his stew when Smith stepped at the table, wearing his worn-out but thick coat, the backpack over his shoulder. "Where are you going? "

"To the school for a little Christmas celebration. I thought maybe you would like to accompany me."

The big guy smirked. "You know, I love Sister Hannah, but I am so not into that shit. Telling the children about Jesus, who was born to save the world... think about all that is happened during the last years, and then tell me that this is not just a fucking lie. "

Smith smiled. "Christmas is so much more than just that," he said. "It's about tradition, about sharing your love with others. It's about hope and joy.

For some weeks already, the children have been so hyper. They have decorated the hall, baked cookies, and created small gifts for each other. Michelle is rehearsing a little play with some of them, and there will be a choir. We will sit around the big fireplace, share winter stories, and have hot cocoa."

Kurdy had listened in silence. "Elizabeth would have loved this, "he murmured. "She was so into Christmas and these small snowglobes."

"One more reason to come with me, "Smith answered. "In your heart, she will celebrate with us; she and everyone we have loved... and lost. That's the meaning of Christmas."

„But Dad won't come home today.“

„I'm afraid he won't,“ Zeke agreed. „The airports are closed, too.“

Jason sighed. „That's not fair,“ he repeated. „We wanted to go to the Christmas Market this weekend, and now I can't even build a snowman in the garden with him.“

„But we can have hot cocoa with marshmallows and bake some waffles,“ Zeke tried to cheer the little boy up. „We can play Clue and watch some cheesy Christmas movies. How does this sound?“

„Well, I don't,“ she admitted.

„It's Kutja, a very old recipe from Russia. Made out of wheat grains, honey, nuts and some other stuff. Sweet, but delicious. I can't cook, but already, as a child, my grandma taught me to make Kutja for Christmas.“

Now, Mrs. Connor's curiosity was fully awake; it was not that Zeke was willing to share bits of his past often. „Your grandma was from Russia?“

„No, she was born here already. But her family has polish-russian roots, and she loved to keep the old traditions alive.“ The smile on Zeke's face vanished for a moment. „She was a great woman. Sadly, she died some years ago.“

Mrs. Connor placed a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it slightly. „And now it is up to you to remember the old traditions,“ she said. „Thank you, Zeke, for sharing with us.“

Until one day in the winter, Rosie knocked at the door of Bags End. "Today is the shortest day of the year,“ she told him. „Winter Solstice. Did you know that at the beginning of all times, the hobbits used to celebrate this day?“

Surprised, Sam looked up. „Where do you know this from?“

„Gandalf told me once. He said that it is a tradition of hope. And that we should revive it one day.“ She kept quiet for a moment. „It was a hard time for all of us, so why not start with it today?“

„A party? No, thanks. I need to finish this chapter of the book, and then I will go to sleep.“

„Not a party. No music and no fireworks.“ Rosie smiled. „Just a little celebration in honor of this special day. We will have a campfire, remember the old times and the people we have lost. Butterblum will come by with his mulled wine, and farmer Maggot has bestowed a basket with potatoes and mushrooms.“

„Frodo would have liked this,“ he murmured. „He loved baked potatoes.“

„Who knows, wherever they are now, he, and Bilbo, Gandalf, and all the elves, maybe they will celebrate this day, too. Maybe Frodo will tell stories about the Shire and you, and he will hope that everything is okay and that you can be happy again.“

„Hello, my son.“ When he called the little boy like that, his heart always started to beat faster. My son! Oh, how much he loved him. But it was still so new. Even if Jason had been living with him and Zeke for almost a year already, it had been a long way to get permission to adopt him. „How did you sleep tonight?“

„No nightmares. I dreamed about a reindeer. It was living in our backyard.“

„Oh. That sounds great.“ It did indeed; every night without a nightmare was a good night. Jason was still dealing with the aftermath of a much too hard start into life.

„It was a very friendly one; I could even ride on it. Can we have a reindeer one day? That would be fun.“

Casey smiled at the excitedly sparkling eyes of the little boy. „You know, only Santa Claus has a reindeer to visit all the children at Christmas. And I guess you are not Santa Claus.“

Jason shrugged, disappointed. „I am not!“

„But maybe we can adopt a cat or a dog from the animal shelter.“ Casey knew Zeke would happily agree; how often had they already talked about how great it would be to have a dog around? „Would you like that?“

„It would be my dog?“

„Why not? I guess with a bit of help, you are old enough to take good care of him.“

The eyes started to beam again. „A dog is much better than a reindeer. I can play with him all day and at night he can sleep in my bed. Chase away the nightmares.“

„Well.“ Casey laughed. „Maybe not in your bed. But we can place a comfy blanket beside it for you new friend.“

It was almost ten o'clock when Zeke stepped into the living room. „Sorry for being so late. It was a weird day.“

Casey put his book down and smiled. „You are home now; that's fine by me. Jason was a bit disappointed, though; he was so eager to tell you the news.“

„What kind of news?“ Zeke dropped down on the couch, stretching out his legs. „Oh, this is good. It feels as if I was working for fourteen hours nonstop.“

Casey turned to the kitchen area. „I will quickly reheat the spaghetti, then I will tell you. You won't believe it.“

„He did win the reading contest?“

Casey laughed; they both knew that Jason had his difficulties with reading; he liked math and art. „Even better,“ he said, putting a bottle of Heineken on the table. „You know, they are talking about The Grinch at school this week. Miss Wilson tries to teach them that the Grinch is not a bad guy but a lonely one who is just looking for some warmth and love. Seems as if our son took this a bit too literally.“

Zeke took a sip of the beer. „Understand,“ he said. „We will celebrate Christmas this year together with the Grinch.“

„Close!“ The microwave binged, and Zeke got up to get his spaghetti. „We might celebrate Christmas this year together with Mr. Anderson.“

„Outsch!“ There was a loud bang when the plate landed on the kitchen counter.

Casey chuckled slightly. „Everything okay?“

„Shit is hot!“ Balancing the plate on a tablet, Zeke returned to the living room. „Did you just say we will celebrate Christmas with Mr. Anderson?“

„Yup!“

„The same guy, who is living two houses down the road? Who knows to start a fight with almost everyone? Because of just everything? The shit who did call the youth welfare office already twice because he can't stand it that two married guys have adopted a child? And who calls our son a bastard?“ Zeke rolled his eyes. „Tell me that this is just a bad joke.“

„Jason invited him.“

„He did what?“

„If I got everything right, they painted pictures at school today for the Grinch to invite him home for Christmas Eve. So that he wouldn't have to stay alone that day.

Looks as if Jay liked the idea a bit too much. On his way home, he put the invitation into Mr. Anderson's mailbox.“

„Oh no!“ Zeke smirked. „Though that's actually a nice idea, I'm afraid Mr. Anderson won't see it that way. Probably, he will dump the picture and call the police because he feels stalked.“

„Maybe not. Maybe it 's true and
Christmas can work wonders. He turned up here this evening, asked for Jay. I can tell you I was highly alarmed, but he only smiled and pulled out a bar of chocolate. Said, that Jay is the finest boy he had met for ages. Before he left, he even kind of apologized for all he had thought about us so far.“

The spaghetti on the plate got cold; Zeke had listened full of bewilderment. „I would say that sounds like a good April's fool, but it's December already and almost Christmas. Did he... He didn't take this invitation seriously, right?“

Laughing, Casey shook his head. „No, of course not. It's not, that we are best friends now. But Jason does. All evening, he has already made plans for what to do with Mr. Anderson at Christmas. And you know... when Jason is on a mission, it's hard to stop him.“

Casey pulled the blanket around his body and sipped his hot tea. He enjoyed his new life in New York, but how much had he missed the silent winter nights of Herrington? New York never slept, no matter the hour or the weather.

„Hey, geek boy.“ Zeke stepped on the porch with a cigarette. „Still alive? Your mom starts to worry that you might have turned into a chunk of ice already.“

„She should know better.“ Casey laughed. „I always was a winter boy; stayed outside as long as possible. Just sitting here alone, watching the stars, and the moon glittering on the snow. Listening to the silence. What can be better?“

„This makes not much sense. You can't hear the silence.“

„But it feels like that. Winter nights in Herrington are so different from the busy nightlife in a big city.“ He noticed Zeke's eyes resting on him thoughtfully. „Don't get me wrong, I am not thinking about it to move back here again. New York has lots of amenities I don't want to miss anymore, but lonely winter nights are not one of them.“

Zeke kissed Casey's cold cheek and dropped down on the bench beside him. „Mind sharing the blanket for a while when I promise to shut up?“

Wicked little letters - written for Empire Fandom

Title: Overcoming Her Past
Character: Edith Swan, mention of Rose Gooding
Word Count: 427
Prompt: overcome
Rating: PG13

:::

Edith couldn't stop laughing. Though she actually should cry and be full of panic.

The truth was out. And she was sitting in a police car on her way into prison. So long, she had tried to hide her secret. Had blamed Rose for being the author of the letters. Rose, who had such a different life than hers, who was free and never minced matters. The moment she moved to Littlehampton, the interest of almost everyone living here had focused on her. However, no one would have admitted it.

Edith didn't either, but inwardly, she envied her with all her heart because Rose had all she secretly dreamed about for her whole life, well knowing that she would be forever trapped in her monotonous life between church and her parent's household.

Until the idea started to grow. First, she only wrote down the words she had heard Rose say. Whore. Bitch. Cocksucker. Fuck my pussy. Her hands had been shaking; her face was deep red. But, oh, this was so exciting, so daring. She couldn't stop absorbing whatever Rose did or said.

It lasted for some weeks. Then, it was not enough any longer. She wanted – no – she needed to share her secret with others. Or she would burst. And she started to write the letters. First, she addressed them to herself. Ohhh, the way her father got angry, and the shocked look of her mother. Soon enough, also the neighbors started to talk about the letters she got. And she … Finally, she felt alive.

When the police arrested Rose for writing obscene letters, she felt guilty for a tiny moment. But it felt impossible to come up with the truth. Why actually? Today, some months later, when her charade was finally exposed because of a much too smart female police officer, she couldn't understand what she had been afraid of.

It was good like it was. Rose was free again, back to her daughter and the man she loved. The inhabitants of Littlehampton would finally stop to treat her with such disrespect just because she was a bit different than most of them. Maybe Rose was what the little town needed to move forward into a better future, especially for women.

Her future? She knew what was waiting for her. Some time in prison, and even after her release, she would never go back to Littlehampton again. Finally, she could take her life into her own hands. Would be free like Rose. Never again would she have to hide her true self.

Title: The Coldest Nights in Hebra
Character: Link, an old man (OC)
Word Count: 321
Prompt: chill / it's cold outside
Rating: PG13

:::

Link shivered. It was freezing cold in the mountains of Hebra, and all he had to keep himself warm were the archaic warm greaves he had found in an old chest some time ago. But he had no other choice. Even if there were only fragmentary memories of his past, he knew one thing for sure. Zelda was still somewhere out here, and she needed his help. Step by step, he needed to move on. He needed to find her.

When he noticed the barely flickering campfire near the sheer rock wall, he stopped. He had already learned it; it was always better to be careful. So many monsters were roaming around everywhere; creatures he had never seen before.

But it was only an old man sitting beside the fire. His face covered by the big hood of his cape. The voice was friendly when he said: “Come closer. You look so chilled through, warm up for a moment.“

Link didn't hesitate any longer, thankfully tilting his head. A short rest was so needed. The fire was comfortable, and the roasted meat warmed him from the inside. The old man watched him silently; obviously, he was not a guy for many words. Until he finally said: „You are on a challenging mission, young Link. And if you fail, this might be the end of everything.“

Link kept quiet; this didn't sound very reassuring. And where did he know his name from? The man seemed to sense his feelings and smiled while continuing. „Just believe in yourself, and maybe everything will come to a good end.

Allow me to help you. Here is my old sword; I am too weak now to use it any longer, but it's still in a good state. Take it!

And take these cookies; they are made from Hyrule grass and chilies. I know they don't taste particularly good, but they will keep you warm even on the coldest nights of Hebra.“

Prompt: the snowman magically comes to live
Rating: PG13

Tabitha watched Ethan and Julie building a snowman in front of the house. She smiled. At least some normality; for some moments, her ten-year-old son could leave the depressing circumstances behind and act like every boy on a snowy winter day would do. And even Julie, who's lighthearted teenage years had ended the moment they stranded at this horrible place, looked almost happy while throwing snowballs at her little brother.

A hardly noticeable movement in the back caught Tabitha's attention. Maybe just a shadow? There was no one around besides the children. Her mouth got dry. And the snowman. He seemed to stare at her with dark eyes, and a shudder ran through her body.

„Ethan! Julie! You should better come in now.“

The little boy turned around, laughing. „Just a bit longer, please. We have so much fun, and it's still two hours before it gets dark.“

The snowman seemed to pull his mouth into a smirk, and Tabitha panicked. „Ethan! Now,“ she yelled. To her relief, Julie no longer hesitated; she grabbed Ethan's hand and pulled him up the stairs into the house.

With shaking hands, Tabitha banged the door shut behind them, locked the bars, and fleetingly touched the talisman hanging on a nail beside the door. While she turned to the window to close the curtains, the snowman lifted his arm and waved at her. Then he was gone.

She hugged Julie and Ethan, closing her eyes to fight back the tears. No matter what dangers were waiting for them out there, they were safe at least for the moment.

For him, she would always be a junkie, though she had left these times behind, and she was fighting so hard to prove that she was, despite everything, still a good doctor.

„Here you are! Taking a nap?“

She almost jumped when his voice reached her ears. A minute, she thought, just a minute. It was not asked for too much, wasn't it?

„It's a long night,“ he said, his voice surprisingly gentle. She lifted her head to make sure that it was him, standing in the breakroom. „You did a good job so far.“

She blinked. „Thanks.“

He smiled. He smiled? „Think you could need this.“

„Coffee,“ she asked when she noticed the mug in his hands, still unsure what to think.

„You don't need caffeine; you need something to empower you. Body and soul. Hot chocolate with cream and a touch of cinnamon. It should help to bring you through the rest of the night.“

Perplexed, she stared at him; where could he know this from, that she loved hot chocolate with cream? It always reminded her of the good times in her life. He put the mug on the table before her, his face grumpy again, as ever. „Five minutes. Then I need you back in the emergency room.“

„Ohhh!“

His boyfriend's loud outcry almost made Zeke jump. „What's happened?“

Casey giggled hilariously, pointing at the window. „Do you see this? Snow! The first snow of the season. God, I love living in San Francisco, but a winter without snow is a no-go.“

Zeke grinned. „So, what are we going to do this afternoon?“

„Snow angels. Building a snowman. Going to the park; I love the park when it's snowed in. The ice rink: I always enjoyed ice skating as much as I hate sports. And at the Christmas Market, all the lights are sparkling twice as great when it's snowing. We need to go there this weekend with my little cousin; he will freak out to meet Santa.“

Casey suddenly paused, eying Zeke thoughtfully. „But maybe all this is kinda boring for you? Herrington is just a small town compared with San Francisco. Our winter activities are not very exciting.“

Zeke smiled and pulled him closer for a kiss. „Believe me, there always was enough excitement in my life, but I have never had something like this. Winter fun in the snow, Christmas holidays with a great family around. And someone who loves me like I am. That's all I need.“

Feeling exhausted, Charlotte blew out the last candle, pulling the blankets around her and George. Finally, he had fallen asleep, and she could hope that the rest would help him get better again.

There were good days and bad days, and today had been the worst day in months. Not even she had been able to reach him in his delusional state. Even after all the years, it always tore her apart when he was like this. But she was the Queen of England, not allowed to show any weakness. Especially not when King George had a bad day.

„Holy shit.“ Casey grabbed another piece of pizza. „This is the best pizza I've ever had.“

Erin laughed. „I will tell Alejandro; he will be happy about the compliment.“

„He's a brilliant cook. I wonder where he did learn it.“

„It runs in his family. His grandparents immigrated from Italy at the end of the last century and started a small business in Chicago. When his father took it over, they already owned restaurants all over Illinois. It was a done deal that Alejandro would step into their feet one day.“

Casey kept quiet for a moment, suddenly feeling sad. „Until a stupid virus made all his dreams collapse.“

„We all had to bury most of our dreams and start a new life.“ Erin put her hand on his shoulder. „Alejandro always says he is a lucky guy because he can still do what he loves. Cooking according to the old recipes of his grandmother. Once a week, we have an 'Italien Day' at the cafeteria, and I can tell you, it's never more crowded than on Wednesdays."

She smiled. „Some days ago, he told me that his girlfriend is pregnant. And he hopes that one day, his son will take over the family business. That's a nice thought, don't you think so?“

Casey nodded slowly. "I guess."

"Enjoy your pizza." Erin blinked. "But leave some space for dessert. His tiramisu is delicious."
