Title: Missed
Character: Kurdy Malloy, Erin Kaufman, Rose Smith, Mr. Smith
Words: 375
Prompt: bananas (bingo prompt) / Fandom Rush
:::
Kurdy watched the little girl, who was entirely concentrated on her puzzle, inwardly sighing. It was only a matter of time before she would start wondering about her dad's absence. And he was unsure how to explain to her, that he was missed. Since last night already.
It was not that rare that Smith did his own thing, no matter what Marcus, Lee, or Kurdy asked him to do. But it had never happened before that he didn't return when he knew Rose would visit him. The little girl was living at an old convent—a school and a children's home today—a much better place for her than a former military laboratory built in a Mountain.
When footsteps came closer, Rose looked up expectantly. „Daddy?“
„It's me, honey.“ Erin smiled wide, but Kurdy noticed her shaking her head indiscernibly. „Look what I have here. Michelle was planting some seed last year, and now it is growing in our greenhouse.“
Rose's eyes widened. „What's that,“ she asked.
„It's a fruit. A banana.“
„I can eat it?“
„Oh, yes, and it's delicious. Sweet. Wanna try?“
Eagerly, the girl nodded, watching Erin peel the long, yellow fruit. Then she reached a piece over. Rose grabbed it, smelled it, and chuckled delightedly before taking a first mini bite. She held it in her mouth for a moment before swallowing and licking her lips. „Good!“
Erin laughed. „Do you want more?“
Rose hesitated. „Maybe a little bit. The rest I will save for my dad!“
Kurdy bit his upper lip; it had been only a tiny delay. „Rose,“ he started when suddenly the door to the Mountain's cafeteria flew open, and a little guy stepped in. He placed his heavy backpack on the floor and hurried over to them.
„Daddy,“ Rose cheered, throwing herself into his arms. Kurdy noticed Smith slightly swaying while he caught her, and there was a small cut on his cheek; his coat was dirty and torn at the arm. Obviously, something had happened, but this would have to wait until later. Smith was back; he wouldn't have to tell Rose that she had lost her beloved father.
"Daddy, Erin has a banana," she told him, "have you ever eaten one before?"
