Title: The Elegant Suit
Character: Casey Connor, Zeke Tyler
Word Count: 195
Prompt: elegant
Rating: PG13

:::

Zeke eyed his friend, slightly amused. „Woah, that's an elegant suit. And the dark blue shirt meets your eyes perfectly.“

Casey sighed. „If you say so.“

„You don't think so? So, why do you wear it?“

„Well, I am not used to dressing up like this. But Deliah says, I can't show up at the interview with the GQ in jeans.“

„Oh, this again. Deliah is a bitch who would never miss an opportunity to put on a show. But you don't have to follow all her wishes when it makes you uncomfortable. The GQ wants an interview with a talented young boy from Herrington, Ohio, who won the Leica Oskar Barnack Award for junior photographer. They won't expect you to turn up like a Hollywood star on the red carpet.“

„You think so?“ Looking relieved, Casey didn't hesitate and loosened his tie.

„Yup. Just be who you are, and everything will be fine.“ Zeke paused, then he bent forward to place a kiss on Casey's lips. „Though I wouldn't mind if you wear this suit once again this evening. Just for me. Because you look pretty hot in it.“

Title: The Whisper in his Head
Character: Mr. Smith
Word Count: 372
Prompt: whispering
Rating: PG13

:::

Restless, he tossed and turned around, trying to find at least some rest. All in vain. The whispering voice in his head seemed not willing to stop tonight. „It's your faith, “God said, “the future of the world lies in your hand.“

As if he cared about the world or about his faith. All he wanted was to get over with the next day. There was too much horror, too much pain. Sometimes, he was sure he couldn't endure it any longer. But then he did remember the day everything started.

Even if he had lost track of time and place before this day, he could still picture the bridge he had crossed one day. He had stopped, stared down into the dark, cold water. And the idea crossed his mind to bring it to an end. He was all alone. No one would miss him. Carefully, he had put his backpack on the ground; maybe someone else would cross the bridge tomorrow, and the stuff inside might help to survive a day longer or two. Unlike him, some people still cared about their miserable life.

Then he claimed the guarding railing of the bridge... and jumped.

:::

He couldn't say what had happened when he opened his eyes again. The ground was sandy, the sun was shining, a stormy wind met his face. And there was a constant noise in his head. Finally, it turned into a voice. „You need to get up; there's a lot to do.“

Growing, he obeyed, looking around. He was alone. Didn't recognize his surroundings. Couldn't remember how he had come here. Didn't even know... his name. In his head, there was an endless emptiness. Only the voice, buzzing and buzzing.

This wass not real. Some fragments of memories came back. The bridge. The sea. He couldn't swim. He had to be dead.

„You are not,“ the voice answered. „People don't listen to God's word any longer. So I decided that I need a messenger. And I saved you.“

:::

Smith smirked, pulling his old coat closer around him. Being God's messenger hadn't made his life easier, but he had accepted that there was no chance to escape the whisper in his head.

Title: In Serious Trouble
Character: Casey Connor, Zeke Tyler
Word Count: 505
Prompt: trouble
Rating: PG13

„Why did you do this? Why do you were so mean to him?“ Blue eyes sparkled, full of anger. „And what are you doing here anyway?“

Zeke shrugged. „It's a club I use to visit almost every weekend. Which is not exactly what can be said about you. I would never have thought of meeting the golden boy of Herrington High at a wicked club one day. Together with a fucker who could almost be his father.“

Casey frowned. „I don't know what you are talking about. He is... “ he tried to explain, but Zeke shook his head.

„Oh, stop it; don't try to fool me. I've got eyes in my head. It wasn't difficult to figure out what was going on. I just can't get it that you are that stupid.“

„What's stupid with it, to meet a good friend?“

Zeke rolled his eyes. „I hope you don't believe your own shit. A good friend? Where did you meet him? At the chess club? At a galerie?“

„We are visiting the same photo website.“ Casey blinked, slightly nervous now. „We chatted for about a month already, and when I told him that my parents aren't at home for the weekend, he suggested meeting tonight. There's nothing wrong with it.“

Zeke huffed. „How can it be that a boy with such a brilliant mind falls for this bullshit? Casey, Casey, you can't be that desperate. It might be difficult to be gay in a small town like ...“

Casey's eyes widened while he blushed. „I am not...“

„Well, I don't care,“ Zeke interrupted him. „But I can tell you that he was thinking the same. And he didn't invite you into a club for chatting about photos.“

„Why do you say this?“ Now Casey was pale like a sheet; Zeke cursed silently, hoping he wouldn't collapse immediately. „You don't know anything about him.“

„Oh yes, I do.“ Maybe it was harsh to be honest like this, but Casey needed to face the truth. „He is here almost every weekend with a different guy. Young, inexperienced, ready to believe all the shit he tells them. At the end of the evening, they are much too drunk to think about the consequences of their doing, and they don't mind going home with him. Do you want to hear more?“

Casey licked his suddenly dry lips. „No!“

„Good. Then, maybe I can give you a ride home now? Unless you want to stay here, waiting for the next prince.“

„No,“ Casey repeated. „I just can't get it … why the hell do you do all this? You never acted as if you were interested in me.“

„I am not, I promise." Zeke chuckled slightly. "But we are lab partners!“

„What?“

„We are lab partners at school. Not interested in getting a new one. You were in serious trouble, so I had no other choice but to save your stupid ass. Don't get carried away.“

Title: Burning the Letter
Character: Lee, Jeremiah, Erin
Word Count: 343
Prompt: writing, tragedy
Rating: PG13

:::

Lee stopped, watching Jeremiah frowning. „What are you doing there?“

The young man looked up, a piece of paper still in his hands. Flames were flickering over his face. „What does it look like?“

„Like a waste of resources. Paper is rare nowadays, and there is no reason to burn it when there is enough undergrowth nearby.“

„Well, it's my paper, so I guess this is none of your business.“

„Everything going on in the Mountain concerns me. I am responsible for the safety and well-being of everyone living here. If you want to stay...“

„Here you are, Lee.“ A young woman stepped out from between the trees. „Marcus is looking for you; it's something about the old fabric near Clearwater.“

Without hesitating, Lee turned to the big gate of the Mountain. „Okay. I need to talk to him anyway. Too many newcomers lately who don't follow the rules.“ One last glance at Jeremiah, then he was gone.

The young woman smiled. „Hello. My name is Erin. I guess you are one of the newcomers he is talking about?“

„Jeremiah,“ he answered. „And I give a shit about his rules.“ He stared into the flames, put the paper closer, watching it catching fire. „It needs to be done; the letter must burn.“

„You are writing a letter to burn it,“ Erin asked curiously.

Jeremiah shrugged; he didn't like to talk about it. This was a father-son thing. The only one which was still left. His father was gone, like his mother, like all the adults. Fifteen years ago, and he still missed him. He missed him so much that he would grab every chance to write him a letter. About his feelings, his fears, his lost hopes. About all he usually refused to think about. Life was hard; there was no time for sentiment.

So, after writing everything down that bothered him, he had to burn the letter—a letter to a father, who was most likely not alive anymore. No one else was supposed to read it.

Title: The Lunchbox
Character: Tabitha Matthews, Jim Matthews, mention of Victor Kavanaugh
Word Count: 354
Prompt: lunchbox
Rating: PG13

:::

„Did you hear about it?“ Jim controlled the windows for a last time; the night was almost there, and the creature would come, looking for them. „Victor had a breakdown this afternoon. He's in the hospital ward now; they had to fix him to his bed.“

„Yeah,“ Tabitha said. „It's because of his lunchbox, I guess.“

„Hm?“ Jim looked at her questioningly. „What do you know about this?“

„I didn't mean to harm him; only wanted to risk a look.“ Her voice sounded low. „Thought that whatever he is hiding in there can maybe bring us closer to home.“

„Tabby, no!“ Jim was shocked. „What did you do?“

„I wanted to bring it back before he would even notice that it's gone.“ Her hands were shaking when she grabbed her mug with tea. „But he came back too early because of the storm. I am so sorry for that; I can't even say what's gotten into me. But the box was just there, in the middle of his bed, and...“ She shrugged, feeling helpless. "I don't know, I just took it with me."

„Did you...“ Jim hesitated. „... open it?“

Tabitha shook her head. „No. The moment I put the box on this table, it was like waking up from a dream. The content in this box is all that's still left from his past. How could I do what I did? I don't want to imagine his feelings when he noticed his loss.“

„Life is pretty crazy at the moment. We all are overstepping the lines now and then.“ Reassuring, Jim put an arm around her shoulder. „We will give it back to him. Maybe we can say we found it on the road or in the diner. He doesn't need to know the truth.“

Tabitha stared at him silently, letting his words sink in until she finally shook his head. „No! I will go to him first in the morning and tell him all I have done. He might hate me for it, but that's okay. At least I will not hate myself for lying to him.“
