„How could you dare it?“ With annoyed sparkling eyes Delilah stepped in Zeke's way.
„Huh?“ Slightly frowning, he looked at her. „What are you talking about? What did I do?“
„Have you told Casey to ask for adequate payment for being the photographer at prom?“
„Oh, that.“ Zeke didn't hide his smirk. „It's only fair, isn't it? I guess you know how much his work is worth. He is very talented.“
„Because I gave him the chance to work for the school's magazine,“ Delilah huffed. „Without me, no one would have taken any notice of his photos.“
Zeke huffed. „Do you believe in your own words, Delilah,“ he asked. „You have used him all the time. He spent every Friday afternoon at the football field, though he hates sport and the jocks treat him like shit. And he has agreed to take the photos at prom, though this will definitely not be fun. How can you blame him that he wants to take at least some advantage out of wasting his time with overdressed bitches and their sweethearts, while everyone knows that most of the couples will have broken up before the end of summer?“
„I don't blame him,“ Delilah hissed,“ I blame you! This is all your fault. Since Casey has started hanging around with you, he has changed!“
„Oh, he did?“ Zeke smiled, and he could see that she felt the urge to smash him right into his face. „Well, if you ask me, it's about time that he stops playing your obedient lapdog.“ Suddenly an idea crossed his mind.“I guess you don't want a good piece of advice from me? Maybe you should better look for a prom photographer in Akron or Columbus. Might be that Casey changes his mind because he has something better to do at prom night.“
To his amusement, Delilah now paled visibly. „You can't be serious! This would ruin prom for everyone; it's much too late to find a good photographer elsewhere for this weekend.“
Zeke shrugged. „To be honest, that's your problem,“ he said, turned around, and walked away. Well knowing that this scenario would never happen. Casey wasn't like this. Yes, he had tried to convince him to leave Herrington and prom madness behind, go to his grandfather's cottage at the lake or elsewhere. But Casey had denied it. „You know, I love the place, and we can go there all summer. But this weekend... no. I've made a promise; I would feel like an asshole to turn my back on her.“ At least he had agreed to ask for some payment, not enough to Zeke's mind; a professional photographer would have asked for the tenfold.
Satisfied whistling, he reached the parking lot and grinned wide while getting into his GTO. If he was right, Deliah was desperate enough now to finally make Casey the well-deserved, fair offer.
